Default be gentle with me, please

I'm a rookie at this.

Cubs Fan since 1953--back to the days of Brickhouse and
Harry Creighton, Gene Baker, "Handsome Ransom," et al.

You all know what I'm talking about, I'm sure.

I remember coming home from school, seeing the Cubs playing--most of the time they were losing, and Bob Will was always pinch hitting. Brickhouse's famous line was , Here comes Bob, where there's a way, there's a Will."

Sounds sillier now than then, but it sticks with you--especially if you are a Cub Fan.

Welcome aboard. Not to worry about hazing here sam; you'll have our most prolific poster (SmedIndy), among others, on your side. And hey ... it looks like a good year for the Cubs (well ... at least a good April.) Oops, did I just break my no hazing promise?

Welcome aboard, Sam.

Nice to have the perspective of someone who watched many of the guys I've only had the chance to read about.

Welcome, Sam. I thought Bob Will was the father of Western Swing ("San Antonio Rose', etc).

It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

Bob Will (as opposed to Bob Wills, the Texas Swing-guy) wa another in a line of heart-breakers the Cubs have employed as pinch-hitters

What am I doing limiting the heart-breakers to the pinch hitters?
Gee, the line-up of failed relief pitchers, catchers, starting pitchers (with a few notable exceptions) is seemingly endless for me. This is my 50th year of mediocrity, and I'm only fifty-six years old. The rest of these guys who are writing have no idea what it is like to have seen Bill Faul, Dick Drott, Paul Reushel (not his brother, Rick, who was a decent guy for a few years). Then, there was Cuno Barragan, Dick Bertell, Vic Roznovski, Handsome Ransom Jackson, Eddie Miksis. and Frankie Baumholtz, who was my early favorite. I think he is buried in center field--dropped dead out there one day trying to cover the ground left uncovered by Andy Pafko and Hank Sauer, two of the slowest guys ever to "lumber" on to a baseball field.

Bellhorn and the rest of these guys are nothing new. Don't get so excited, guys.

if you are going to a Cub game in June, be sure to take along a jacket if you intend to sit anywhere but the bleachers or up close along the first base line

the old line about the coldest winter of my life was the summer I spent in San Francisco applies equally to a late spring, early summer game at Wrigley--don't get fooled by those pictures of the boats on the lake--those guys are freezing their butts off

other than that, it is one of the greatest experiences you will ever have, from parking lot or train station to pre-game warm-ups to the game, to leaving--incredible

at least hundley could catch--he couldn't hit worth a darn for an extended period

some of those other guys were just humps--all well-meaning, and no harm meant, but they truly were "in a league of their own"

I remember watching one game where all the Cub catchers had already been pinch hit for or thrown out of the game, and they had to use Dale Long, a left-handed first baseman to catch

he did such a good job, that Brickhouse suggested he become the regular--i think they would have if they could have gotten away with it

we had hobie landrith, harry chiti (i believe--and I think he is the guy that garagiola said was traded for himself), and sammy taylor
in addition to the aforementioned barragan, roznovsky, et al
