Burnett will have surgery today to repair ligament damage in his elbow. His season is over and it looks like he's also going to need Tommy John surgery, which puts 2004 in serious jeopardy. BP's Will Carroll will discuss who's responsible in today's UTK. Corrections from yesterday--Chase Utley's grand slam wasn't in his major league debut. The Mets were not victims of 26 SO performances in a doubleheader in 1970-71. Instead, they were the teams whose pitchers achieved the feat, with the Phillies and Padres being the victims. Meanwhile, the 3rd NL team that had shared the record before Sunday was the Giants, who did it against the Astros, also in 1971.

1) The Diamondbacks placed P Curt Schilling on the 15 day DL, retroactive to April 18, and activated C Rod Barajas from the DL.
Schilling was scheduled to start on Thursday, but suffered from discomfort during a throwing session. Since his start was then pushed back to Saturday, it was time to put him on the DL. After double digit negative RCAAs in his first couple of years in the majors (excluding a combined total of just 10 games in 1999-2000), despite playing in just a total of 121 games, Barajas is off to a .429 SLG, .286 OBA, .714 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 6 games. 2) The Yankees will activate P Mariano Rivera from the DL today. Randy Choate will probably be sent down. After 2.85 ERA/19 RSAA and 2.34 ERA/19 RSAA seasons, Rivera had a 2.74 ERA/7 RSAA in 2002 and hasn't made his 2003 debut yet. He has a 2.60 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.74, and 131 RSAA in 448 games. 3) The Redsox placed P Chad Fox on the 15 day DL. They are expected to activate P Alan Embree today, but they could call up Bobby Howry instead or add both of those pitchers and also send down Kevin Tolar. Fox has a strained left oblique muscle. After a career best 1.89 ERA/19 RSAA season in 2001, he was limited to just 3 games in 2002 and is off to a 3.86 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 10 games and also walked 10 in 9 1/3 innings. Fox has a 3.36 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.30, and 19 RSAA in 163 games. 4) The Rangers will drop C Chad Kreuter today. He was told on Sunday that he'd be released, traded or designated for assignment today. The move wasn't made earlier since the team was off yesterday and decided not to make sooner. After 0 RCAA/.732 OPS and -1 RCAA/.712 OPS seasons, Kreuter's off to a .167 SLG, .238 OBA, .405 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 7 games. He has a .692 career OPS, compared to his league average of .763, and -61 RCAA in 944 games. Kreuter was being used as Chan Ho Park's personal catcher, but the team didn't like the results of Park's pitching. Meanwhile, Park has a strained lower back and could be headed for the DL. 5) Devil Rays OF prospect Josh Hamilton will rejoin their AA team this weekend. He missed over a month, due to personal reasons, and is expected to work out for about a week before starting to play. 6) The Brewers released minor league P Jamey Wright. Wright had a clause in his contract that said he could be released if he wasn't in the majors by this past Sunday. Wright's 5.29 ERA/-20 RSAA with the Brewers and Cardinals in 2002 was his 2nd consecutive double digit negative RSAA and the 3rd in his 7 year career. He has a 5.17 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and -31 RSAA in 174 games. Wright had a 7.36 ERA in 7 games in AAA this year. 7) According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cubs are again pursuing Shea Hillenbrand, with time the interest "quite serious." Both ESPN's Peter Gammons and the Chicago paper are reporting there could be a 3 way deal in the works that would sent Hillenbrand to the Cubs, Juan Cruz to the Reds and Scott Williamson to the Redsox. 8) The Angels sent P Derrick Turnbow to the minors and P Francisco Rodriguez is expected to rejoin the team, after being on the bereavement list, today. 9) On Sunday, Diamondbacks Ps Brandon Webb and Randy Johnson became the first set of teammates to both have 10+ SO in a doubleheader since Mets P Jon Matlack and Jerry Koosman, on April 14, 1974. 11) Dodgers LF Brian Jordan was sent home before yesterday's game, due to a flulike symptoms, and says he may go to the hospital today if he doesn't feel better. Meanwhile, CF Dave Roberts, who's missed 3 games due to a strained hamstring, says he doesn't expect to return until at least Wednesday. After 4 RCAA/.830 OPS and 13 RCAA/.807 OPS seasons, Jordan is off to a .407 SLG, .368 OBA, .776 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 25 games. He has a .806 career OPS, compared to his league average of .770, and 54 RCAA in 1230 games. 12) The Phillies sent INF Nick Punto to the minors and will activate CF Marlon Byrd from the DL today. Punto had a .237 OPS/-2 RCAA in 9 games (1 for 12 with a walk). Byrd, a highly touted 25 year old rookie, is off to a slow start, hitting .258 SLG, .316 OBA, .574 OPS, -2 RCAA start in 11 games. 13) Twins INF Denny Hocking has a sore elbow and could be headed for the DL. Hocking's had a double digit negative RCAA 6 times in the past 7 years and is off to a .200 SLG, .188 OBA, .388 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 10 games. He has a .660 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -104 RCAA in 803 games. 14) On Sunday, the Marlins tied the NL record by receiving 16 walks in an extra inning game, tying the mark set by the Reds, on October 1, 1978. The major league record is 20, by the Redsox, on September 17, 1920. But, interestingly, the NL record for extra inning games is below the league mark for 9 inning games. Three times NL teams drew 17 walks in 9 innings--Cubs, on May 30, 1887, the Dodgers, on August 27, 1903, and the Giants, on April 30, 1944.
