Wink Institutions of higher pitching.

Amherst and Williams played in the first college game in 1859.

I wouldn't neceesarily call them institutions of higher pitching. The final score in that game was Amherst 73 (or 72) Williams 33.

The game was played 13 on 13 and played by different rules. Later that year, there was another game played by two schools that was the first 9 on 9 match.

Anyone willing to take a guess what the other acceptable answer is?

I'm not sure, but did you pull it from Early Innings?

And nice signature - the Dewey number for baseball.

Thanks Craig. I assumed it had something to do with counting.

Early Innings did mention the other game as well. And one of the schools had an alum in later yars that was quite a force on the Veteran's Committee.

Not only that, but at least one of the teams was from NYC. If there's no answer by tommorrow, I'll post it.

Default and the answer is ...

Fordham versus Xavier in November of 1859. This game was played under the "New York" rules with nine players on each side. The Amherst-Williams game was played under Massachusetts rules.
