Amherst and Williams played in the first college game in 1859.

I wouldn't neceesarily call them institutions of higher pitching. The final score in that game was Amherst 73 (or 72) Williams 33.
The game was played 13 on 13 and played by different rules. Later that year, there was another game played by two schools that was the first 9 on 9 match. |

Early Innings did mention the other game as well. And one of the schools had an alum in later yars that was quite a force on the Veteran's Committee.

Fordham versus Xavier in November of 1859. This game was played under the "New York" rules with nine players on each side. The Amherst-Williams game was played under Massachusetts rules.
