1) Mets LF Jeromy Burnitz suffered a broken left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Billy Wagner. Meanwhile, P David Cone had to leave after 2 innings, due to a hip injury.

Burnitz is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. He missed 5 weeks in 1999, after breaking the same bone. After 12 RCAA/.851 OPS and -16 RCAA/.677 OPS seasons, Burnitz is off to a .515 SLG, .364 OBA, .878 OPS, 2 RCAA start in his first 19 games and has a .838 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 88 RCAA in 1166 games.

Cone's off to a 6.75 ERA/-5 RSAA start in his first 4 starts and has only pitched a total of 16 innings.

2) Barry Bonds missed yesterday's game, due to a sore neck.

After 169 RCAA/1.379 OPS and 161 RCAA/1.381 OPS seasons, Bonds is off to a .694 SLG, .500 OBA, 1.194 OPS, 12 RCAA start in his first 16 games. He has a 1.024 career OPS, compared to his league average of .747, and 1241 RCAA in 2455 games.

3) The Royals clinched a winning April for the first time since 1989.

4) The Angels placed P Kevin Appier on the 15 day DL, retroactive to Sunday, sent INF Chone Figgins to the minors, activated 2B Adam Kennedy from the DL and called up OF Jeff DaVanon.

Appier has a strained flexor muscle in his forearm. Figgins was off to a .294 SLG, .324 OBA, .618 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 11 games.

After -26 RCAA/.703 OPS and -19 RCAA/.690 OPS seasons in his first 2 years as a starter, Kennedy had a 14 RCAA/.795 OPS in 2002 and is off to a .294 SLG, .300 OBA, .594 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 7 games. DaVanon has a .658 OPS/-10 RCAA in 64 career games.

5) A's 3B Eric Chavez was given a day off yesterday, to rest a sore shoulder.

After 28 RCAA/.878 OPS and 21 RCAA/.7860 OPS seasons, Chavez is off to a .507 SLG, .388 OBA, .895, 3 RCAA start in his first 19 games. He has a .846 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and 64 RCAA in 607 games.

6) The A's are expected to activate P Jim Mecir from the DL today.

7) Pirates 1B Randall Simon left yesterday's game, due to a mild concussion, after a collision with Giants 2B Ray Durham. Since the team's facing a lefty today, Simon's next extended to be in the lineup.

8) Rangers CF Doug Glanville, who is on the DL, is considering having knee surgery.

A MRI showed he has a torn tendon behind his right knee. If he has surgery, the expected recovery time is 4 weeks.

9) The Rangers sent P C.J. Nitkowski to the minors after he cleared waivers. He had been removed from the roster when he was designated for assignment on Friday.

10) Whitesox P Jon Garland is in danger of losing his spot in the rotation if he doesn't pitch well in his next start, which is Saturday against the Twins.

After 3.69 ERA/12 RSAA and 4.58 ERA/0 RSAA seasons, Garland's off to a 7.32 ERA/-6 RSAA start in his first 4 starts. He has a 4.78 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.55, and -4 RSAA in 87 games.

11) Dodgers P Odalis Perez, who hasn't pitched since April 11, due to a sprained right ankle, now expects to be able to start on Friday.

After 4.91 ERA/-5 RSAA and 3.00 ERA/18 RSAA seasons, Perez is off to a 4.19 ERA/-1 RSAA start in his first 3 starts. He has a 4.13 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.28, and -6 RSAA in 87 games.

12) Dodgers 3B Adrian Beltre had a closed door meeting with MGR Jim Tracy. Beltre's been benched 4 times in the past 7 games and says that, while he doesn't want to be traded, if the Dodgers don't want him, "There are 29 other teams out there."

After -5 RCAA/.720 OPS and -8 RCAA/.729 OPS seasons, Beltre's off to a .362 SLG, .226 OBA, .588 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 18 games. He has a .752 career OPS, compared to his league average of .781, and -10 RCAA in 670 games.

13) Marlins 1B Derrek Lee was expected to end his consecutive game streak when his wife gave birth sometime around May 1. But, since she did it on Monday, which was an offday, his streak's intact.

Lee's 230 game streak is the longest current streak in the NL. After 8 RCAA/.820 OPS and 29 RCAA/.872 OPS seasons, he's off to a .479 SLG, .371 OBA, .850 OPS, 4 RCAA start in his first 21 games. Lee has a .806 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 32 RCAA in 732 games.

14) The Cardinals released minor league P Dan Serafini.

Serafini hasn't pitched in the majors since 2000.

15) Yankees P Antonio Osuna had to leave yesterday's game, due to cramping in his groin.

After 20.77 ERA/-8 RSAA (just 4 games) and 3.86 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Osuna's off to a 1.59 ERA/4 RSAA start in his first 9 games. He has a 3.51 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.34, and 25 RSAA in 337 games.

1) Cubs RF Sammy Sosa was able to be in the lineup. He had a CT scan after being hit in the head by a pitch on Sunday.

2) Padres P Brian Lawrence tied the major league record by hitting 3 Cubs hitters in the 4th inning. He hit Alex Gonzalez, Sammy Sosa and Hee Seop Choi.

Lawrence became the 19th pitcher to tie the record and the first since Steve Sparks, on May 22, 1999. The 3 HBP puts Lawrence in the Padres top 10 lists for both career HBP and HBP worse than the league average--

Code:
HIT BY PITCHES T1 Eric Show 46 T1 Joey Hamilton 46 3 Andy Ashby 37 4 Bill Greif 32 5 Andy Hawkins 26 6 Matt Clement 25 7 Sterling Hitchcock 24 T8 Dave Freisleben 21 T8 Brian Lawrence 21 T8 Clay Kirby 21 HIT BY PITCHES DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Bill Greif -19 32 13 2 Eric Show -17 46 29 3 Joey Hamilton -13 46 33 T4 Matt Clement -10 25 15 T4 Mike Corkins -10 20 10 6 Gary Ross -8 17 9 T7 Brian Lawrence -7 21 14 T7 Dave Freisleben -7 21 14 T9 Andy Hawkins -6 26 20 T9 Todd Erdos -6 8 2 T9 Bryce Florie -6 10 4 T9 Brian Williams -6 8 2

3) According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions may be interested in drafting Yankees minor league QB (3B pro tem) Drew Henson in the late rounds of the NFL draft.

4) The Royals plan on calling up P Kyle Snyder on Friday, to take Jeremy Affeldt's spot in the rotation. Albie Lopez and Kris Wilson were candidates to go into the rotation, but the team prefers to keep them in the bullpen.

5) Giants P Jason Schmidt left the team, after his mother died. She had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor during spring training last year.

Schmidt will miss his start tomorrow, with Damian Moss expected to move up a day. Then, the Giants will probably call up another starter for Friday or Saturday.

6) The Expos played their 1st home game in Montreal, after playing 10 home games in Puerto Rico.

7) Padres CF Mark Kotsay left yesterday's game, after the top of the 1st, due to a strained lower back.

After 11 RCAA/.807 OPS and 19 RCAA/.810 OPS seasons, Kotsay is off to a .372 SLG, .364 OBA, .735 OPS, 2 RCAA start in his first 20 games. He has a .761 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779, and -2 RCAA in 760 games.

8) The Yankees 17-3 record is a team record for the first 20 games of a season.

9) The Pirates will move P Salomon Torres into the rotation, while Josh Fogg is on the DL.

In his first appearances in the majors since 1997,
Torres had a 2.70 ERA/6 RSAA in 5 starts with the 2002 Pirates and is off to a 1.93 ERA/4 RSAA start in 7 relief appearances in 2003. He has a 5.27 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.42, and -33 RSAA in 80 games.

10) The Reds outrighted minor league P Chris Booker to the minors. Booker's recovering from shoulder surgery and this move takes him off the 40 man roster.

11) Devil Rays RF Damian Rolls suffered a nondisplaced fracture of his thumb and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Rolls is off to a .219 SLG, .306 0BA, .524 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 15 games and has a .643 OPS/-17 RCAA in 121 career games.

12) The Devil Rays decided not to call up P prospect Dewon Brazelton to take Nick Bierbrodt's spot in the rotation on Friday. Instead, Seth McClung will be moved from the bullpen to the rotation.

McClung's a 22 year old rookie who never pitched above AA before 2003, was ranked as the Devil Rays #5 prospect by Baseball America and was given a C+ grade by John Sickels. He has a 4.30 ERA/0 RSAA in 7 relief appearances.

13) In their first 20 games, the Yankees have hit 40 HR. By comparison, in their first 18 games, the Tigers have scored a total of 39 runs.

Meanwhile, the Yankees pitching staff has allowed just 5 HR.
