Your Guys, By The Numbers
Let's try and get every team done - - -
For YOUR fav team, if not done already in this thread, count from 1 to, say, 60, and for every number state:- the current player wearing that number, or - if no player currently wears that number, the last player to wear that number, or......the player the number is retired for......... I'll do the Yankees as an example - - Current PLAYERS/COACHES in CAPS - - 1 - Martin 2 - JETER 3 - Ruth 4 - Gehrig 5 - DiMaggio 6 - TORRE 7 - Mantle 8 - Berra 9 - Maris 10 - Rizzuto 11 - ALMONTE 12 - SORIANO 13 - OSUNA 14 - WILSON 15 - Munson 16 - Ford 17 - FLAHERTY 18 - WEAVER 19 - VENTURA 20 - POSADA 21 - O'Neill 22 - CLEMENS 23 - Mattingly 24 - Martinez 25 - GIAMBI 26 - Lieber 27 - ZEILE 28 - LATHAM 29 - TRAMMELL 30 - RANDOLPH 31 - KARSAY 32 - Howard 33 - WELLS 34 - STOTTLEMYRE 35 - MUSSINA 36 - JOHNSON 37 - Stengel 38 - Choate 39 - HAMMOND 40 - Holmes 41 - HITCHCOCK 42 - RIVERA 43 - MONDESI 44 - Jackson 45 - ANDERSON 46 - PETTITTE 47 - Henson 48 - Tessmer 49 - Guidry 50 - ???????? 51 - WILLIAMS 52 - CONTRERAS 53 - MAZZILLI 54 - ZIMMER 55 - MATSUI 56 - DOWN 57 - ACEVEDO 58 - ??????? 59 - Rivera 60 - JOHNSON (before going to 36) I am missing Rich Monteleone - not sure what number he is wearing this year?

This should be Boston's list. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a mistake or two, but it should be pretty accurate. If the last person to wear the number was/is a manager or coach, I've listed two names. If the number is retired for someone who wasn't the last to wear it, both names are listed. Current players/coaches are in CAPS. 1,4,8,9,27,42 are the retired numbers.

You bring up that no one since Rice with the #14 with the Bosox.
The Mets you go all the way back to Ken Boyer with that same #.

Cleveland Indians uniform numbers, the last player to wear them, and last year worn. Hall of Famers are in bold face, along with the number(s) they wore while with the Indians. (Ret) - uniform number retired by the Indians.
Jackie Robinson's uniform number (42) was retired by Major League baseball on April 15, 1997. Mike Jackson wore that number at the time, and continued to wear number 42 through the 1999 season. 0 Junior Ortiz - 1993 00 Paul Dade - 1979 1 Casey Blake - 2003 2 Einar Diaz - 2002 3 Woodie Held - 1962 (Earl Averill - 1939) (Ret) 4 Mark Carreon - 1996 5 Buddy Booker - 1966 (Lou Boudreau - 1950) (Ret) 6 Jolbert Cabrera - 2001 (Larry Doby - 1953) 7 Brandon Phillips - 2003 8 John McDonald - 2003 9 Lee Stevens/Brady Anderson - 2002 (Bob Feller - 1936) (Ralph Kiner - 1955) 10 Jolbert Cabrera/Coco Crisp - 2002 11 Matt Lawton - 2003 12 Ricky Gutierrez - 2003 (Al Lopez - 1947) 13 Omar Vizquel - 2003 14 Jesse Levis - 1992 (Bob Feller - 1937-38) (Larry Doby - 1958) (Ret) 15 Tim Laker - 2003 16 Chad Paronto - 2002 (Hal Newhouser - 1954-55) 17 Travis Fryman - 2002 18 Ron Tingley - 1988 (Mel Harder - 1947) (Ret) 19 Bob Feller - 1956 (Ret) 20 Karim Garcia - 2003 (Frank Robinson - 1974-76) 21 Greg Swindell - 1991 (Bob Lemon - 1958) (Ret) 22 Earl Snyder - 2002 23 Ellis Burks - 2003 24 Milton Bradley - 2003 (Early Wynn - 1949-57) 25 Jim Thome - 2002 26 Bob Wickman - 2003 (Hoyt Wilhelm - 1957-58) 27 Jaret Wright - 2002 28 Russ Branyan - 2002 29 Steve Woodard - 2001 (Sam Rice - 1934) (Satchel Paige - 1948-49) 30 Chris Magruder - 2002 31 Brian Anderson - 2003 (Dave Winfield - 1995 - Coach) 32 Travis Hafner - 2003 (Steve Carlton - 1987) 33 Eddie Murray - Player (1994-96)/Coach - 2003 34 Dave Burba - 2002 (Lou Boudreau - 1938) 35 Enrique Wilson - 2000 (Phil Niekro - 1986-87) 36 Bill Selby - 2002 (Gaylord Perry - 1972-75) 37 Jake Westbrook - 2003 (Larry Doby - 1949) 38 Aaron Myette - 2003 (Bob Lemon - 1941) (Early Wynn - 1963) 39 Mark Wohlers - 2003 40 Billy Traber - 2003 41 Charles Nagy - 2002 42 Mike Jackson - 1999 (Bob Lemon - 1942) 43 Doug Jones - 1998 44 Josh Bard - 2003 45 Terry Mulholland - 2003/Mike Brown - Coach - 2003 46 Jason Bere - 2003 47 Shane Spencer - 2003 48 Jose Santiago - 2003 49 Jason Beverlin - 2002 50 Jason Davis - 2003 51 Jerrod Riggan - 2002 52 CC Sabathia - 2003 53 Carl Sadler - 2003 54 David Riske - 2003 55 Danys Baez - 2003 56 Ricardo Rodriguez - 2003 57 Ryan Drese - 2002 58 Heath Murray - 2002 59 Jason Phillips - 2002 60 Brian Tallet - 2002 61 Brandon Phillips - 2002 62 Greg LaRocca - 2002 63 Andrew Lorraine - 2000 64 Jason Davis - 2002 65 Cliff Lee - 2003 66 Russ Branyan - 2000 67 Chris Nichting - 2000 68 Turner Ward - 1990 69 Luis Medina - 1988 70 (never worn) 71 Willie Martinez - 2000 72 John McDonald - 2000 73 Ricardo Rincon - 2002 74 (never worn) 75 Mike Walker - 1988 76 Tom Morgan - 1989 77 Jack Armstrong - 1992 78 through 87 (never worn) 88 Rene Gonzales - 1994 * Stan Covelski 1916-24 * Tris Speaker 1916-26 * From the HoF website: For brief periods during both the 1916 and 1917 seasons, the Indians experimented by placing uniform numbers on the sleeves of their players. The large uniform numbers corresponded to numbers printed in the Indians' scorecard, allowing fans to more easily identify players on the field. Two future Hall of Fame members, Stan Coveleski and Tris Speaker, played for the Indians during these brief trials and thus wore uniform numbers. Few photographs exist of the Indians with these uniform numbers and the few that do fail to reveal the full number for each player. From one photograph of the 1916 Indians it is clear that the first digit of Coveleski's number is "2" and the first digit of Speaker's number is "3". What is not clear is what (if any) second digit there may be for either of these players. |
