Who was the first major leaguer to have a significant baseball award named after him while he was still an active player?

Not the Hammer. His career does have significant overlap with Aaron, though.

His name is a homophone for a famous brand of boxed candies.

The 1st Roberto Clemente Man Of The Year Award was given in 1971.
Roberto played 132 games that year.

I guess the Clemente Award fits the criteria and it was created prior to the one I'm after but it is not just for baseball performance. The one I am after is. To make my question I should have made it clear the award is given by one of the leagues rather than MLB.

Actually the name was changed after his death. It was originally called The Man of the Year Award

Yes.
If I told you the name of the candy you would have the answer. It is a box candy that you typically buy in a supermarket for Valentine's Day rather than going to a real candy store.
