Wink A's sign Tejada to 5-yr deal

Oakland Signs Tejada to Five-Year Extension
Reigning MVP to Get $58.5 Million

OAKLAND (API) -- A's General Manager Billy Beane announced today that the Oakland Athletics have signed AL MVP Miguel Tejada to an extension through the 2008 season.

"We're very pleased to have gotten this done," said Beane, "and it's a tremendous load off my mind to know that we'll have Miguel in Oakland for many years to come. It's important to the success of the A's and for our fans. I couldn't be more pleased."

The terms of Tejada's deal include a $3.5 million signing bonus, and escalating salaries through the 2008 season averaging $11 million annually.

OK, where's the April Fool? The "hunting trip" bit at the end is what tips me off.

Wow! So much for not negotiating. I hope that they find Schott.

All the free articles posted on BP today are April's Fools jokes. This one got me for about half a minute. The rest of them are pretty funny. I lked the one that called for all baseball players to take performance enhancing drugs.

Default Slow?

You wouldn't believe how many still haven't gotten the joke ...

One nationally known personality even was on a nationally aired show quoting the story. Can't wait to hear how many mediots called Oakland asking for comment.

Maybe I'm missing something, but ... what's so funny about this? Just the last line (not quoted above)? I think it's just sad and mean.

If BP wants to keep its reputation as a serious and reliable source, it really should avoid junk like this. The fact that people took the report seriously is no surprise - why shouldn't they, the only "joke" was tucked away at the very end, after a collection of very plausible and not at all humorous details. Color me unimpressed.

Well, gosh, thanks. Nice to know who is the arbiter of all that is funny or not.

From a news source? When it contains barely any indication that it's supposed to be a joke?

Well executed hoaxes - which this one was not, in my opinion, regardless of whether you declare that I lack a sense of humor - start out plausible but gradually build layers of implausibility until finally the reader says, okay, I was taken. This one has no build-up, just a throwaway at the end which a reader could very well be excused for missing.

No sense of humor? Perhaps, rather, a refined one.

I agree with Satch - - - if you want to be taken seriously, then, you should act serious -- all the time.

Personally, I have the rep for playing the fool sometimes at work - - because, maybe once or twice (OK, maybe 12 times in 5 years) I did, willingly, play the fool - - for laughs. Because of such, I got labeled. People are shocked to see me serious sometimes.

It's like the SS that boots 4 balls in one game as a rookie. He gets labeled as having bad hands and it takes a long time to get rid of that.

Plus - the story was lame, IMHO.

It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

About time Oakland spent some money to keep their players.

Though not offended in the least by this article BP had best stick to baseball analysis as their attempts at humor fall flat.

you are being the arbiter if, for you, humor must fit some cookie-cutter convention...

when did Baseball Prospectus become a news source? they do baseball analysis, not breaking news. that, in itself, should have been a dead giveaway.

it doesn't matter anyways, it's april 2nd, there are a bunch of baseball games on, and even Steve Schott is saying they may bring Tejada back: http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0402/1532926.html (this link is not a hoax)

"cookie-cutter convention?" where do you get that from? Look, I think the piece, as an attempt at a joke, stank. You don't. Fine.

Well, whatever. It still doesn't make me laugh.
