Cool Barry Goes 500/500

I really think we will never see this again. Here's a nice feature on it:

POSTING TIP FOR THE DAY: When composing a post, think about what you would say if the intended recipient was an individual who was actually sitting just two feet in front of you, in person, rather than just some far away and anonymous audience who only can identify you as text on a PC screen - - and then write your post in that manner. It makes for remarkable and sincere discourse.

It is very astonishing; Barry is such an incredible athlete and baseball player. It almost sounds stupid to say it because it's so obvious right now. pat, even if we'll see it again I don't think that diminishes the achievement. It's the kind of achievement that one or maybe two players in a generation even has a shot at.

A-Rod might have been able to do it if he hadn't busted up his knee somewhere along the line ... I seem to remember he looked like a 50-50 threat after his 40-40 season in 1998. But then he had an ACL injury or the like, maybe in 1999? His stolen base numbers are way down since then, he hasn't even stolen 20 since 1999.

The only other person who comes to mind as an even remote possibility is Alfonso Soriano, but he has a lot of baseball to play before it will be clear whether he deserves mention in the same post with the likes of A-Rod, Bonds, and Mays.

I think we may see someone do this again, but it will be a long time. I am happy to see Bonds finally reach this milestone. He's been close for awhile. He would of had it last year if not for the hamstring problems.

Side note: Both Barry's 500 HR and 500 SB were against the Dodgers at home and both ultimately help the Giants to win the game.

Its amazing. Even with the homer explosion we've seen recently, I don't think this will occur again for a very long time. My instict is never, but who knows...

I would put my money on Vlad of any active player to do it.

Doubtful we'll see it again. Nowadays, stealing bags takes too much wear and tear on the body and no one seems inclined to take that risk, especially power hitters, with that much jack on the line. 500 homers/bags is 20 years of 25/yr. Even now, Pierre is leading the league with what 25 SBs (50 for the year). The trend is to stay put.

I applaud Bonds for this achievement. It truly is amazing. And no one else is even 400/400.

I seem to remember back pre-73, when the media hated bonds with a passion (i always loved the guy), Barry said once he hit his 500th homer and stole his 500th base, he would retire. That would be it.

I certainly hope that he no longer feels that way.
