Question The Quiet Spring 2003?

Yes, we had the death in O's camp, and the Wells' book, and the Griffey trade rumors - - - but, Spring Training is now 1/2 done - and we're three weeks away from Opening Day....oes it seem too quiet, or is it just me?

Well, it really doesn't hit the fan in ST until the big cuts start coming, and the stress of turning it up a notch causes the bad wheels to blow out....

My numbers are telling me that things are a lot busier this spring than last, at least in the past few days.

Total number of ATM items, from March 1-8:

2002: 67
2003: 127

During that 8 day period in 2002, only 3 of the 8 days had at least 10 items. In 2003, every day reached that figure.

In 2003, every day but 1 has had at least 12 items, with the sole exception dropping all the way down to 11. In 2002, only 1 day exceeded 12, with another day matching it.

Could there be more items because there are still a number of players unsigned - more so than usual - and rumors are out there on them most days?

I'm surprised even this didn't get more play - - did ESPN.com even pick up the story?

Default Not in Winter Haven!

You want great Spring Training action? You want hustling young prospects trying to shed that prospect label and become PLAYERS? You want a manager who took his Whitey Herzog vitamins? Finally -- you want a team that looks ALIVE out there and is in every game to kick ass and take names later?

Look no farther than Winter Haven.

That's not it.

Today's item on the Pirates wanting to resolve the Kenny Lofton question was the first time this month that a free agent rumor made it into the reports. All of the other free agent rumors during the days in question were just the same old names, with the same old teams, that had previously been mentioned, so they didn't make it into the ATM reports.

There was a tiny increase in the numbers because of teams signing unsigned free agents. But, that number increased from 1 in 2002 to a mere 3 in 2003.

Actually, I haven't noticed spring training at all this year- which is normal. Until the NCAAs are over - I watch baseball peripherally.

However, WHEN that's over...then fuggedaboutit!
