Red face Well, well, Wells...................

OK, back in the off-season, did anyone really think he would be a 19-game winner this year?

AL Comeback Player of the Year?

Nope - I thought the Yanks were making a big mistake by booting Lilly out of the rotation. Who'dve thunk Lilly would spend more time out with injuries than Wells?

I'm not all that surprised, because of the fact that he's wearing a Yankee uniform again.

No way!!! I saw Wells pitch earlier in the year and that boy was walking funny. I thought for sure his surgery had not went well. He had a toe lag and 2x I thought he an off balance throw and thought he was going to fall off the mound.

I was dead wrong. The pinstripes worked some magic on him. Give him the comeback player award. Never would have guessed it in a million years.

Default Give him the award...

Never did I think Wells would pitch so well and spend less time on the DL than a good number of Yankee pitchers...I read somewhere today that Pettitte, Clemens, El Duque and Mariano spent a season's worth of games on the DL -- it's surprising the team finished where they did -- and a tip of the hat goes to Wells and George...most of all for stealing him from Colangelo.

Wells exceeded expectations. He had a very good season and received some very nice run-support during his wins.

However, the comeback player of the year award goes to either Pedro Martinez or Nomar Garciaparra. Period. How do they get consideration for Cy and MVP and NOT get consideration for the Comeback?

Besides, Wells is a sideshow and a loudmouth. He'll cost himself some votes because of his personality. Personally, I've always been a Boomer fan. But he ain't the comeback player of the year.

Pedro and Nomar were good in 2001. Just limited. Wells was both limited and a poor 2001 performer. He came further back, IMHO.

I definitely agree with you on this one

I agree too. No one had expectations of Pedro or Nomar stinking up the joint this year.

I figured he'd be ok - maybe 12-14 wins 4.30 ERA. how much is he getting paid?

I, too, thought he would be good again, back in the Bronx, but he exceeded all expectations.

I thought he was toast, but he had a SUPER year. Wells' year was so good that, IMO, he is now on the radar screen as a HOF candidate.

Before your pacemakers short out, I will hasten to add that Wells is a MEGA MEGA LONGSHOT CANDIDATE right now, at best. The only endorsement I could give his candidacy, right now, is that there are a few pitchers in the HOF who didn't have as good careers as he has had to date. That's not saying much, and I wouldn't support his candidacy. But he has a great winning %, and has a chance to add to postseason lore. He resurrected his career, and enhanced his reputation, and his place in baseball history. He also kept alive the chance for future enhancements.

I'd definitely give him the award, although the competition for it wasn't exactly heated.

As for his HOF chances, I guess everyone's eligible. I don't know how the voters can ignore almost 200 wins and an ERA barely over 4.00!
