Default Griffey's Trade Value

apparently the O's are seriously interested in Griffey and are willing to TAKE ON HIS ENTIRE SALARY. The Reds are reluctant. What are they thinking??? Do they think someone will offer something good for him? I guess they almost got Phil Nevin, but he's no great shakes IMO. If I were the Reds, I'd be overjoyed just to unload $80 million in salary. anything in return, would be icing on the cake.

Aaron Gleeman has a great take on this over at http://baseballblog.blogspot.com/ You have to read down aways to get to it.

Gleeman's basic point is that the Orioles are willing to trade Sidney Ponson and one or two prospects to get Griffey. He thinks the O's ought to make that deal in a heartbeat, but there is a problem. As rated by numerous people the O's do not have a single Top 100 prospect in their entire organization.

I think Griffey would still have good value for a team like the Orioles. They badly need someone to draw people to the stadium and if Griffey could stay healthy, which is a better bet in Baltimore with the DH, then he could be a good fit. That salary is very large and the reds probably could fill in a lot of holes with all of that money.

However, assume Ken needs to go to a corner OF spot to save his hammies - - - would you rather have Gibbons' 30 HRs at his price in RF or Griffey's 40ish HRs in RF at his price (and baggage)?

I think part of the Reds' reluctance stems from possible fan revolt. It doesn't look good when you build a taxpayer-funded stadium, raise ticket prices by a large margin, then trade away your biggest draw.

I'm not saying it's not the right move for the team or the franchise, only that I can understand there being some hesitancy. If they do cut spending by unloading Junior, they better devote at least some of the savings to improving the team. Otherwise, the novelty of the new park will give way to unhappy fans staying home.

Trade away star power (though star-crossed right now) for a bunch of leaves and twigs?

I would think that the Orioles could find a spot for both Griffey and Gibbons.

From ESPN: "BRADENTON, Fla. -- Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds has connected for three homers today against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Griffey connected off Kris Benson in the first inning. He took Benson deep again in the third, and then victimized Julian Tavarez in the fifth inning. Griffey now has four homers this spring."

If Griff's trade value goes up, then what more can the O's offer - besides non-prospects. Of course the O's should do it if they can, but I dont see how the trade works with any info I have available.

I think this is a good sign for Junior (that Cincinatti isn't -- publically, anyway -- pursuing this). It's still possible to build around him and $80MM isn't dreadful money if (it becomes a bigger if with each passing month) Griffey can return to form.

On the other hand, if the Orioles could actually get the Reds to bite on this, they could get the steal of the (young) century.

Griffey's current trade value? Gotta be worth more than what the O's can offer.

Assuming that just pitchers are involved, all you've gotta do is move Batista to SS and shift Conine to 3B and accept the defensive loss. This allows RF/1B/DH to be shared by Richard, Griffey, and Gibbons. Segui is in the mix in the latter two but when he suffers his annual injury he's gonna be no factor.

Yes, you bench a better defender in Deivi Cruz...that's the way the ball bounces.

Does Junior have a no trade clause? Would he go to Baltimore?

Oxonian95... Welcome to the forum! Griffey doesn't have a no trade clause. When he was traded to San Diego Phil Nevin invoked his no trade clause to nix the trade.

That would be a brutal infield. I would hate to be a ground ball pitcher on that team.
