For anyone who might be interested--and specifically for anyone who lives close to Cincinnati--the CASEY Award banquet will take place this Sunday, March 2. Howard Bryant, author of the book, Shut Out: A Story of Race and Baseball in Boston, will be on hand to accept his bronze CASEY plaque as the author of the best baseball book of 2002. (It's a great book, by the way, with lots of insights on Tom Yawkey, Dick O'Connell, Peter Gammons, Will McDonough, and others.) The annual CASEY awards banquet is held at the Madisonville Community Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The banquet lineup will include a baseball poetry reading, a trivia contest, a variety of book signings, and an acceptance speech by Bryant.
For more information on this Sunday's CASEY banquet (ticket prices and such), call Spitball editor-in-chief Mike Shannon (not the former St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman) at 513-385-2268. Mike is a nice guy and I'm sure will be glad to hear from anyone who has interest in the Casey Award.

Wish I'd known about this sooner, Bruce! I have Arena Football duties this Sunday or it would have been an easy drive. What kind of turnouts do these events have? Strictly insider? Literary?
Maybe my Rushford book will win next year. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Right after that, Pete got into tax trouble (in California), and that delayed the process." - Phillies Chairman Bill Giles in the Dayton Daily News, January 25th, 2004. |

I think that a lot of the turnout comes from the local community in and around Cincinnati. Spitball is a literary magazine, so I would say it's more of a literary crowd that attends the Casey Award banquet. I doubt there will be many from the Reds or the baseball insider world there.
From what I have heard about the event, it sounds like a fun time. It's also a good opportunity to get books signed by authors, since there are a number of book signings planned for the day. Mike Shannon, who's the editor of Spitball, puts a lot of effort into putting the whole thing together.

I talked to Mike Shannon this morning, and I think I'll go on Sunday. I really like Bryant's book, so I'm looking forward to hearing him speak.

Did anyone go the Casey Award banquet? If so, what were your impressions?
