February 15th - 12:27 am ET Man Ordered to Pay for Dropping Former Major Leaguer CecilFielder's Name

The Associated Press An interior decorator who dropped the name of former major leaguer Cecil Fielder without his permission was ordered Friday to pay the three-time All-Star $415,000.

A jury ordered Robert Weinstein to pay civil damages for mentioning Fielder as a client in news articles and using his name in advertisements for his interior design firm.

Weinstein performed a $1.3 million redecoration of Fielder's home in Melbourne, Fla., but the two had a falling-out in 1998.

Fielder's attorney, Daniel Rosenbaum, said the verdict "sends a message to the public that you can't steal a celebrity's name."

Weinstein's attorney, Richard Gaunt, said his client stopped using Fielder's name as soon as he learned that a law prohibited it. He said Weinstein plans to appeal.

"We really think the reason the jury did this was they were awed by Mr. Fielder's celebrity status," Gaunt said.

Fielder batted .255 and hit 319 home runs with 1,008 RBIs in his 13-year career with five teams. He played mostly with the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

What's kinda sad is that Fielder was the best he could come up with. No knock on Cecil, who was a fine slugger and (ahem) under-rated baserunner, but is his house featured in A.D.?
