Thirty-four seasons. Seven Division Titles. Two AL Championships. One Ring. One Hall-of-Famer.
Who was the second greatest Royal of all time? I wish I had room to include other fine players, such as Paul Splittorff, Jeff Montgomery, Bret Saberhagen and Freddie Patek. There were so many really good players in the franchise's short history. Last edited by Ytown Tribe fan : 02-05-2003 at 08:08 AM. |

I think the Quis was second best. He was one of the best relievers ever.

I think Otis was the best everyday player, but I voted for Quiz anyway......

I opted for Dennis Leonard, the only pitcher in Royals history to put together a string of seven good seasons (1975-1981), and who won 20 games three times.
followed by: Frank White Dan Quisenberry

I know Hal McRae isn't the second best player and he isn't the second most loved player but he is the second most important player in franchise history. He is the guy with his mental toughness and drive to win that got the Royals out of their "we're an axpansion team" mentally and into a winning frame of mind. Brett attributes much of his success to learning the game from McRae.

I look at this list and say - who on the list would have a shot at Cooperstown?
The name that comes up is Frank White. If Bill Maz is in, that White should be in too. So, I voted for White. To run up the defensive numbers that White did, playing on turf, is very impressive - - just as good as Maz, IMHO. And, yes, I say this even 'tho he was a "ah" hitter.

Hal McRae was both an underrated player (not to mention the guy who popularized the much maligned DH) and a decent manager who should've never been let go by management...his firing might be the reason the Royals struggle now...9 years later...oy.
But never the less, the dual success gives him the intangible edge in this poll...because it is a CLOSE, CLOSE race between them for #2. |

I had to vote for A.O., although I have to admit I considered both Mark Davis and Neifi Perez.

Mike Sweeney will have to be on this list in a couple of years.
For now, though, I vote for Frank White, just a little bit ahead of Leonard and Quiz. Freddie Patek was always my favorite though. |

I voted for Sweeney right now. Until Sweeney came along, it would have been Frank White. However, Sweeney has high enough peak value, and appears consistent enough to give him my vote right now. |
