Well, Billie Jean was 29 when she beat the 54-year-old Bobby Riggs. I never saw the point of a great tennis player just past her prime beating a much older out-of-shape guy.
The Colonial will pit the best lady golfer, at the top of her game, against the guys on the tour. |

I wasn't around at the time, so my opinion comes only from a retrospective view. To me, the age difference, a young woman beating an old guy, seems to prove very little. I agree that Annika doing well would mean something much different. |

Still off-topic, but I forgot to mention that Margaret Court was the top-seeded women's tennis player when Bobby Riggs beat her in two sets in May 1973. Riggs had been a top player in the 1930's, while in his teens.
Beating Court wasn't a small feat for a guy in his mid-50's, so he clearly wasn't "out-of-shape" as I posted earlier; so King really DID accomplish something by beating Riggs in three sets. The whole event was a media-circus anyway -- all that was missing was Don King. |

Not out of shape, but clearly had lost his legs during the intervening months. I saw both matches and Riggs clearly had lost a step between the two matches

The Colonial is coming right up and I am looking forward to it.
What's funny about VJ Singh's comments is that they are flat wrong. He is complaining that Annika is "taking a spot that a male golfer could have". Well, the fact is that The Colonial can invite (or NOT invite) anyone they please. There is no "spot" to be filled if, say, another player (male or female) withdraws. It ain't the US Open. If Annika withdrew today, no one would take her spot. He claims to speak for other golfers, but no one else has come forward with such backward comments. You know what it reminds me of? Where have we heard this before: "We'd let them play if they were good enough." "They should stick to their own league." "They won't be welcome in the clubhouse." Yep. Well, Jackie Robinson proved them WAY wrong in '47. I'm guessing that Singh and others are afraid that Annika will not only make the cut, but do well. I hope she finishes in the top-20. Then all we'll be hearing is, "Who's next?" and "She couldn't do that on a longer course." |

The odds against Annika making the cut are at 4-1, which seems a little high to me. She needs a good round today to get her confidence going.

Not too shabby of a start. She has set herself up for a good chance to make the cut.

Has anyone ever done sabremetric-type analysis for golf? It would seem that some types of holes favor certain players, while others favor other types of players. I know a little about golf, but a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Did much better than a one-over par score would indicate. Vijay doesn't know what he's missing.
![]() I'm not sure if there are golf sabermetrics...given the new technological advances in scoring golf there's enough statistical information available to do it with but there might not be a big market for golf ratings that don't pertain to the World rankings or individual facets of one's game. |

Is it just me or is Vijay a little bit of a ChickenBleep for mouthing off and then withdrawing from the tournament. At least if you are going to talk trash come out and play.

He's a big baby or a man of principle, depending on how you feel about women in the men's clubhouse.
All I can say is, Singh should be damned glad it's not 1960 -- he wouldn't be allowed on the tour because of his color. That wasn't that long ago. Here's to Annika! ![]() |

I do think it's convienent that the week off he promised his wife after winning a tournament comes in an event Vijay's mouthed off about the goings on in...I'm not sure what was worse, the mouthing off or the eighth-assed apology...it's not good enough to be quarter or half such.
Perhaps further ironic is that among the first round leaders is the alternate that made the tournament when Vijay left. |

Terry Pluto had a nice take on all this in today's Beacon -Journal.
Without reprinting the story, Pluto basically reminded us that golf tournaments are for the fans, that the money is FROM the fans and sponsors, that Annika is only one of 8 players granted an exemption, and that fan interest in this tourney will certainly be higher because she's in it. And, if a male player doesn't like her presence, all he has to do is shoot a better score than she does to prove his point. |

that despite failing to make the cut, Annika showed winning colors today. She took a genuine risk and does not regret a thing about her experience.

Damn straight. Golf is a fickle game, so whether she made or didn't make the cut is irrelevant...unless you're Tiger Woods anyone can miss the cut. Bob Estes was one of the guys Annika beat, and he's among the top 30 in earnings and had made 11 straight cuts (which I believe was the best streak among golfers in this tourney)...then misses this cut by 6 strokes.
This is truely a case of "it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game", and Annika did quite well in that regard. The fans loved it so you can tell it was a success. That's relevant. And regardless what other golfers or non-sports news networks will insinuate, it was good for the game. Not necessarily for the PGA Tour or the LPGA Tour, it was good for golf in general. I certainly enjoyed it and I was definitely not alone in that regard. |
