In terms of names that have been used more than once, what baseball surname took the longest time between its first appearance and second appearance in a major league?
Hopefully you were able to follow that. ![]() |

Charlie Atherton played until 1899, and Keith Atherton started in 1983, a gap of 84 years. I'm sure there are longer gaps.

Yeah, indeed there are.
Glad you understood the question because I think I'll have fun with this...and you will get a hint in time, I just need to think of one. |

Best I can do for a hint:
Neither of these guys had really distinguished careers, the first person with that last name played all of one year for a team, the second person played just 5 undistinguished years for bad teams, though he had a cameo on a playoff team. The last name is more familiar if you watch NBA basketball on TNT. There's enough of a gap that I can give a second hint...this does involve the NA. |

Pony Sager played in 1871. The next player with that same name was A.J. Sager in 1994.
That's 123 years. And no way I would have gotten that without the TNT clue. |

Rats, the best I could find was Frank Olin (1884-5) and the ill-fated Steve Olin (1989-92).

That's the one. And I had to give the TNT hint because I didn't want this question to go on too long.
![]() I used to know the longest span between name usage that didn't count the NA, but I forgot it now...and actually found that what I thought it was was not what it was. |
