Red face Cliff Floyd - Not Getting It?

In the NY/NJ area, for a couple of days, I kept hearing a sound bite (byte?) from an ESPN Radio interview with Cliff Floyd. They're using it in a "We're your Mets station" promo.

It goes like this, Floyd saying - - "I'm gonna go out there and try and give them a reason to cheer for me."

I assume them is the Met fans. And, in the quote, the "a reason to cheer for me" is exact - - - the preface I can't remember exactly.

Is this the sign of the wrong attitide?

Instead of performing with the hope to get personal cheers, would not the right attitude be looking to perform with the hope that it's part of a winning effort?

Team before me.

Is Floyd a "me" guy?

Mountains out of molehills Max. He's simply telling the fans he wants to come and do right by them. I almost (?) think you're just trolling here.

Well, if he drives in a run or makes a nice catch, which would hopefully lead to a win, that would be a reason to cheer for him.

Not necessarily a red flag, IMO, but perhaps a sign of nervousness.

Not really Skip - I swear, every time I heard it on the radio, all I could think of was that Seinfeld episode where Jerry has the european carry-all and has to wear the fur to fake his super - - and the super says something like "Me, me, me, it's all about me. Look at me. I'm a pretty boy."

I hate that 'tude - esp. in ballplayers.

Using Seinfeld references is wasted on me. Most. Overrated. Ever. (despite several gut-splittingly funny episodes).

I still say you're over-reacting. I'd say it in elvish if I could.

That's always possible. It has been done before.

Having little exposure to Floyd and no exposure to Floyd it reads simply as a guy wanting to play well. No harm in that.

Ah Skip you deride Seinfeld yet use Elvish - a made-up language from a triology (plus one) that is about 235,657 pages too long?

I took it like he wants to give the Mets fans reasons to cheer for him - and if I recall Mets fans were on him for his "feud" with Valentine - so that's probably the reason. Your enemy becomes your friend.

We didn't have much chance to get to know him... but he seems like a stand-up guy. If he had been a "me" guy, the pit bulls in the Boston media would have been all over him, even in a short time.

I seem to recall reading in SI his team-mates saying he's a team player all the way.

What I didn't see out of Floyd last season was impact. He went to Montreal... and then to Boston... neither time did he grab the bull by the horns and lead the teams to the promised land. Of course, in both cases, that was asking a lot.

I think the Muttsies will do better with Cliff than a number of their recent signings.

Well, I think this is nothing. (Although I haven't heard it.)

New York is supposed to be a hard place to play. He's just trying to win over the fans and not have the problems that Bonillia and others have had.

Cliffy will be a solid middle of the order bat. Outside of Thome the Mets couldn't have done better IMO. Still puzzled why they didn't pursue J. Hernandez. 1 year contract would have been ideal for transitioning to Reyes.

More ammo for my case, IMHO.

"Contusion?” Cliff Floyd answered. “Man, I don’t worry about that shit. I just play my game.”

That was my introduction to the 2003 New York Mets.

The question, “What do you think about collusion?” was lost on the muscular, 6-foot-4-inch, newly acquired outfielder. He obviously had no idea what collusion was, or that a 5-year-old kid stood below him listening to his every word.

Note: "my game."

Steve - would you rather him play Timo Perez's game? Or perhaps Rey Ordonez' game?
