Talking Fav Funny Ball Players

To Glyndwr's point here, sorta: http://www.netshrine.com/vbulletin2/...&threadid=8543

Who were your fav "funny" players?

Of recent note - Van Slyke and Magrane come to mind. Some thought Jay Johnstone was funny - I didn't. I thought Bill Lee was a hoot (esp. in the Burns' doc) - - many don't see that.

Sparky Lyle and Graig Nettles were funny.

Who else - past and present?

Back in the day some people found Yogi Berra funny

I have heard a few Barry Zito interviews and he seems to have a good sense of humor.

I would go with Dempsey also. Mark Fidrych was funny without trying to be funny.

Bill Lee
Jim Bouton
Rick Dempsy
Pedro Martinez (well, at least he used to be funny... on days he didn't pitch)
Barry Zito, dude...
Sparky Lyle (I used to only think of him as a great reliever... then I read "Bronx Zoo" back in the early '80s. Now I can't think of him without thinking of birthday cake.)

Jose Cardenal was always "colorful" - Bert Blyleven was always a prankster - and Jim DeShaies was pretty funny.

I would go with the Quiz as well, biased as I grew up watching him.

What a wonderful, intelligent man he was. And thoughtful too. I was once fortunate enough to have been cooled off when Quiz doused the fans with water from a hose when the tempature had to be near 100 degrees.

Still, the funniest act I have ever seen was when the Astros' Nolan Ryan imitated the Reds' Brad "The Animal" Lesley's routine after he struck out one of the Reds, showing Lesley who the real king of strikeouts/intimidation was.

I have to say my list is Bill Lee, Roger McDowell, and Dan Quisenberry. All three either said or did stuff that made me crack up. I have to say that Zito is probably one of the funniest guys in the majors at the moment. Saw him miked up on a game of the week last season and he was just rolling 'em off.
