Michael Kay, the Yankee broadcaster (and former NY Daily News reporter), who's a pretty intelligent guy, said on tonight's radio broadcast, that he saw 61* yesterday (at it's opening) and, in his opinion, it was "the best sports movie I've ever seen."

Can't wait for Saturday! It's a bonus that I have tickets to see the A's-Yanks earlier that day.

I have to disagree with Michael Kay being a pretty intelligent guy. He constantly gets on my nerves by saying stupid things.

On the other hand, I do turn off the TV volume everytime the Yankees are on FOX, to get away from Tim McCarver. Listening to a bad broadcaster is the lesser evil to listening to a terrible one.

But, to get back onto the 61* topic, Mike Francesa was raving about the movie this afternoon. He also read some excerpts from a new book The Sporting News has published on that season. It sounds like a great book and I'm about to send in a book review request form for it.

Don't know how you feel about Al Trautwig, but, he concurred with Kay on the Yankee (MSG) post-game show last night. I have yet to hear anyone say that this flick is less than great. Supposedly, it's 128 minutes long - - take note VCR recorders - - you don't want to miss the last 8 minutes.

I can't make judgement based on someone else's opinion, and since I've not had the "pleasure" of listening to Michael Kay very often, I can't say whether his opinion is valid or not. I heard that Dubya loved it, but who's to say he's a movie critic, either? (I'd make a good diplomat, eh?)
I have a feeling it'll be a good movie, but you won't get my opinion until next Monday. (Whether you want it or not.)

I agree McCarver is nerve-grating, but I'd rather listen to him than Joe Morgan.

Heard from Crystal (in an interview) that Bush was shocking - - in that he knew all the names of the pitchers that gave up HRs. In fact, he (Bush) caught the one mistake in the movie (Crystal had the wrong pitcher giving up something like HR #53). Now, that's scary. But, it proves to me that Bush is an astute baseball fan.

I believe that should be a prerequisite for becoming president.

I caught much of the interview Fancesa/Russo did with Crystall, too. Really good radio. Crystall's passion for the Yanks is impressive. I am sure it is a great movie and am looking forward to it (although I won't be home Sat. night), but I have to temper anything Francesa says about the Yanks, whether current or former teams. The guy is so biased by his alliance to the team.

The weekly Torre report on the FAN with Mike/Mad Dog is too much for me to handle. Francesa could not kiss his ass any more. It is shameless.

The online reviews are split. Half of them don't like it, the others do.

My prediction--I hate it, due to factual inaccuracies such as those that are discussed in a New York Times article from today.

That bad? Or are they just being picky? Hollywood always takes some liberites for the sake of a story. After all, it's a movie, not a documentary.

Lee, you're not doing that "Living Color" critic "Hated It!" thing, are you?

I read the piece and it didn't seem too bad to me. And given all the pain Crystall went through in terms of the others details he got right , the issues the Times reports are trivial, at least to me.

If they wanted to bill it as just entertainment, then they take as many liberties as they want.

But, in his interview on WFAN, Billy Crystal made it clear that he wants the movie to be accepted as historical fact.

Also, I have never seen Living Color.

Once you start getting facts wrong, it makes me question how thoroughly the rest of it was researched.

You make a good point here and a better one with Crystal's comment about having the movie accepted as fact. I had forgotten that he said it, but you are 100% correct. Can't have his cake and eat it, too.

I'll be interested to see what the plethora of baseball historians have to say.

It only had 15 minutes of fame, so, I'm not surprised. On the whole, you didn't miss much.

I probably would have used gaggle or bevy.
