Default Hoffman

Bad news on Hoffman - looks like his shoulder isnt getting any better. He's going to try and avoid surgery, but a decision will have to be made on surgery in the next two weeks so as not to endanger his 2004 campaign. The surgery he'll need to have doesn't have much track record within baseball. My guess is he'll need to have the surgery. I'll have a more in depth look on BP later.

"I was pulling for Pete and agreeing with (commissioner) Bud Selig that Pete should be eligible for the Hall of Fame," said Giles, now chairman of the Phillies. "Bud was close to making him eligible right after his meeting with Pete (November 2002). Right after that, Pete got into tax trouble (in California), and that delayed the process."
- Phillies Chairman Bill Giles in the Dayton Daily News, January 25th, 2004.

Has anyone ever been able to work their way out of this sort of injury?

It's the curse of 50 saves..............

..any pitcher who has saved 50 in a season sees his career end in about 4 to 5 years that follow.

Rivera, Smoltz and Gagne fans, beware.

I'd say this hurts the Padres chances, but I don't believe that they had any chance in their division this year.

I disagree.

It's not a curse of 50 show ups in the 9th. It's the fact that players given that job description have short primes, whether their high is 50 shows up, 40 show ups, 30, ..., whatever.

True, to have more than 25 saves a year in more than 10 seasons is very rare.

Yeah, but how many pitchers put together more than 10 seasons of above average effectiveness, period?

What would be interesting is to see if somehow a closers usage pattern leads to more injuries as opposed to other relievers?
Perhaps the supposed advantage of knowing they only have one inning to pitch, and they can 'let it rip' does more damage in shortening thier career than it helps in their increase in effectiveness?

No idea how you'd go about quantifying something like that though.

To throw in another teaser for the book, I've reproduced a 5 part series I wrote on Mariano Rivera and show up in the 9th inning pitchers in which I addressed longevity.

Statistically, since 1900, there have been 185 pitchers that have done it for 10 or more seasons. About 5 or 6 could join the list this year.
