Who is the only player in major league history to officially be "loaned" to another team for any amount of time?

How about Harry Chiti who ended up being the player to be named later in a trade for himself?

Good try but Chiti, who isn't the only guy to have done this "traded for yourself" business, wasn't officially loaned.

Okay, how about when Connie Mack Borrowed Rube Waddell from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1900 to pitch for the then Milwaukee Brewers.

He is until you re-read the clue: "Major League History". The American League was not major league status in 1900.

I'll help you guys out...and myself for that matter as I nearly went off after the Waddell stuff.
The guy that was loaned (and it was for a brief time mind you but I can confirm it to be a loan) did it during a year when he became the first player in major league history to do something 4 times. One of the players on the team that got him on loan, who became manager after the loaned player left, had done something 4 times for the first time in major league history himself. Billy Martin wasn't even born when it happened.

I've apparently misread my source so I need to fix my hint.
He was still the first player to do something 4 times in a season and he played for a team with a manager who was the first to do something 4 times in major league history, but they weren't the team who got him on loan. My apologies, and now you see why I don't ask trivia questions. ![]() He was actually loaned for a long enough time that he was a regular for the team that acquired him, a team that was the worst in the majors that year that had two player/managers, one with a unique first and last name. |

Okay, I just looked at all the manager for last place teams in the NL form 1876 to 1920 and for the AL from 1901 to 1920. In no case did I find a team that had two player/managers of which one of them had a unique first and last name.
So I guess we are looking in the 1921 to 1928 (when Billy Martin was born) range.

LGO, don't be frustrated. You are clever enough to come up with unique questions that aren't easily answered. That's terrific!
When we can't figure them out, we tend to ask lots of silly things because WE are frustrated. That means you did a good job. Keep them coming. |

Sorry, I just get stressed out a lot..."life" tends to carry over into here sometimes.
I'm also a little frustrated since I had two meaningless trade questions go unanswered as well and I'm thinking it was going to happen again... Speaking of which, meaningless trades helped this player become the first to do the accomplishment he was first to do. Wait, that's redundant... |
