1) In a 3 way trade--
The Whitesox get P Bartolo Colon and minor league INF Jorge Nunez from the Expos The Expos get P Orlando Hernandez from the Yankees, 1B-OF Jeff Liefer and P Rocky Biddle from the Whitesox, along with cash, from both the Whitesox and Yankees The Yankees get P Antonio Osuna and minor league P Delvis Lantigua from the Whitesox. After 3.88 ERA/23 RSAA and 4.09 ERA/11 RSAA seasons, Colon had a 2.93 ERA/37 RSAA in 33 starts (first 16 with the Indians, last 17 with the Expos). He has a 3.85 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.62, and 102 RSAA in 179 games. He'll combine with Mark Buehrle to give the Whitesox one of the best 1-2 combinations in the league. After 4.51 ERA/13 RSAA and 4.85 ERA/-4 RSAA seasons, Hernandez had a 3.64 ERA/12 RSAA in 22 starts (plus 2 relief appearances). He has a 4.04 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.73, and 49 RSAA in 124 games. After -2 RCAA/.364 OPS (just 5 games) and 1 RCAA/.833 OPS seasons, Liefer hit .373 SLG, .295 OBA, .667 OPS, -8 RCAA in 76 games. He has a .725 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and -15 RCAA in 209 games. After starting his career with 8.34 ERA/-8 RSAA (just 4 G/GS) and 5.39 ERA/-11 RSAA seasons, Biddle had a 4.06 ERA/5 RSAA in 44 games (7 starts). He has a 5.23 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.52, and -14 RSAA in 78 games. After 3.74 ERA/4 RSAA and 20.77 ERA/-8 RSAA (just 4 games) seasons, Osuna had a 3.86 ERA/6 RSAA in 59 games. He has a 3.57 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.34, and 21 RSAA in 328 games. 2) The Cubs re-signed P Kerry Wood to a 1 year, $6.19 million contract. After 4.80 ERA/-9 RSAA and 3.36 ERA/16 RSAA seasons, Wood had a 3.66 ERA/8 RSAA in 33 starts. He has a 3.75 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.31, and 30 RSAA in 110 games. 3) The Expos re-signed C Michael Barrett to a 1 year, $2.6 million contract. After -25 RCAA/.565 OPS and -31 RCAA/.655 OPS seasons, Barrett hit .418 SLG, .332 OBA, .749 OPS, -7 RCAA in 117 games. He has a .701 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and -72 RCAA in 472 games. Barrett ranks 6th in Expos history for worst career RCAA-- Code:
4) The Rangers signed free agent P Ismael Valdes to a 1 year, $2.5 million contract. After 5.64 ERA/-17 RSAA and 4.45 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Valdes had a 4.18 ERA/14 RSAA in 31 starts (first 23 with the Rangers, last 8 with the Mariners). He has a 3.77 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 66 RSAA in 255 games. 5) The Cubs signed free agent P Mark Guthrie to a 1 year, $1.9 million contract, with an option for 2004. After 4.67 ERA/0 RSAA and 4.47 ERA/-1 RSAA seasons, Guthrie had a 2.44 ERA/8 RSAA in 68 games with the Mets. He has a 4.11 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.27, and 13 RSAA in 700 games. 6) The Reds signed free agent P Jimmy Anderson to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. After 5.25 ERA/-11 RSAA and 5.10 ERA/-17 RSAA seasons, Anderson had a 5.44 ERA/-17 RSAA in 28 games (25 starts) with the Pirates. He has a 5.17 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and -43 RSAA in 102 games. 7) The Whitesox signed free agent OF Armando Rios to a 1 year, $450,000 contract. After 4 RCAA/.849 OPS and 6 RCAA/.796 OPS seasons, Rios hit .332 SLG, .319 OBA, .650 OPS, -12 RCAA in 76 games with the Pirates. He has a .813 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and 18 RCAA in 370 games. 8) The Mariners finalized John Mabry's contract. It's for 1 year, $850,000, with an option for 2004. 9) The Mariners list of nonroster invitees to spring training--INFs Greg Dobbs, Chad Meyers and Andrew Zapp, OF Shin Soo Choo, Cs Pat Borders, Julio Mosquera and Rene Rivera and Ps Scott Atchison, Ken Cloude, Brian Falkenborg, Clint Nageotte, Brian Sweeney, Norm Charlton and Tim Hamulack. 10) The Indians signed free agent OF Wendell Magee to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training and designated 1B Earl Snyder for assignment. After -5 RCAA/.740 OPS and -10 RCAA/.670 OPS seasons, Magee hit .383 SLG, .289 OBA, .673 OPS, -11 RCAA in 97 games with the Tigers. It was his 4th double digit negative RCAA in his 7 year career. He has a .666 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and -52 RCAA in 386 games. 11) The Brewers released P Paul Rigdon. Rigdon had a 5.45 ERA/-18 RSAA in 32 games with the Indians and Brewers in 2000-01 and spent the entire 2002 season on the DL. 12) The Braves signed P Ryan Glynn to a minor league contract. Glynn had a 6.42 ERA/-30 RSAA in 41 games with the 1999-2001 Rangers. 13) The Phillies signed free agent INF Tyler Houston to a 1 year, $1 million contract. After -11 RCAA/.785 OPS and 4 RCAA/.815 OPS seasons, Houston hit .428 SLG, .323 OBA, .751 OPS, 0 RCAA in 111 games (first 76 with the Brewers, last 35 with the Dodgers). He has a .736 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -48 RCAA in 646 games. 14) The Marlins re-signed OF Juan Encarnacion to a 1 year, $3.45 million contract. After -6 RCAA/.764 OPS and -15 RCAA/.700 OPS seasons, Encarnacion hit .449 SLG, .324 OBA, .773 OPS, -8 RCAA in 152 games (first 83 with the Reds, last 69 with the Marlins). He has a .759 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and -43 RCAA in 596 games. 15) The BlueJays re-signed SS Chris Woodward to a 1 year, $775,000 contract. After .591 OPS/-9 and .600 OPS/-7 RCAA seasons, both in 37 games, Woodward hit .468 SLG, .330 OBA, .797 OPS, 4 RCAA in 90 games. He has a .719 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and -14 RCAA in 178 games. 16) The Angels re-signed 1B Scott Spiezio (1 year, $4.25 million) and P Jarrod Washburn (1 year, $3.875 million). After -2 RCAA/.799 OPS and -3 RCAA/.764 OPS seasons, Spiezio hit .436 SLG, .371 OBA, .807 OPS, 12 RCAA in 153 games. He has a .754 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and -25 RCAA in 774 games. 2002 was the first time Spiezio had either a positive RCAA or an OBA above the league average (+.040) in his 6 year career (excluding a 9 game September rookie callup in 1996). After 3.74 ERA/12 RSAA and 3.77 ERA/22 RSAA seasons, Washburn had a 3.15 ERA/27 RSAA in 32 starts. He has a 3.81 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.60, and 58 RSAA in 107 games. 17) Kevin Millar officially rejected the Redsox claiming him off waivers. Since he has enough major league service time, he has the right to do that, which makes him a free agent, as far as American teams are concerned. According to the Boston Globe, the Redsox are trying to work out a deal where they would sign Millar as a free agent and would then compensate the Japanese team by sending them Benny Agbayani. 18) The Pirates signed free agent P Rolando Arrojo to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. After 5.63 ERA/0 RSAA and 3.48 ERA/12 RSAA seasons, Arrojo had a 4.98 ERA/-5 RSAA in 29 games (8 starts) with the Redsox. He has a has a 4.55 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.68, and 31 RSAA in 158 games. 19) The Dodgers re-signed SS Alex Cora to a 1 year, $1.15 million contract. After -16 RCAA/.658 OPS and -28 RCAA/.591 OPS seasons in his first years as a starter, Cora had a productive .434 SLG, .371 OBA, .805 OPS, 11 RCAA in 115 games, in what could easily have been a career year. He has a .653 career OPS, compared to his league average of .782, and -41 RCAA in 398 games. 20) According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are close to signing free agent P Kerry Ligtenberg.

21) Jeff Frye announced his retirement.
Frye didn't play in 2001, but was hoping to get a minor league contract and invitation to spring training with someone. He finished with a .742 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and -25 RCAA in 667 games, with the Rangers, Redsox, Rockies and BlueJays, from 1992-2001 (except 1993 and 1998).
