Question Bonds, 71, and Us

Looks like Barry is going to get 71.

Just me, or does it seem like most don't care - - or, at the least, they don't care at the level as when Mac was chasing Maris? I say this, and include MLB too. It's their job to create the hype.

I think a big part of this is the fact that Mac did this only a few years ago. Maris's record had stood for almost 40 years. That is a long time.

And don't forget the world events that are overshadowing everything right now.

I also think that the home run isn't as spectacular as it used to be.

I certainly do care.

Mac's record was an encore performance from when he'd crushed 66 the year before and Sammy had done 62 the year before. It was also part of a very big year featuring when David Wells had a perfect game and the Yankees were 114-48. Other home run hitters were also prominent then like Junior. Sammy and Gonzo are the 2nd and 3rd most prolific homerun hitters but the air just isn't as electric.

Sammy is very popular and Barry doesn't seem like the most amusing person. Since McGwire and Sosa did lots of commercials back then, including some together, that added to the feel of everything. The homerun numbers are still high but it just doesn't feel the same.

Actually, McGwire hit 66 the next year, not the previous year. And Sosa hit 63, not 62, the next year, not the previous year.

In that case correction acknowledged but I think you got the overall gist of what I was saying though.

Does anyone know if MLB is doing anything special - at least marking the balls like they did for McGwire?

Anyone think Todd MacFarlane is getting any sleep these days?

MLB said they would start marking the balls once Bonds reached 67, which means now.

Earlier in the year, MacFarlane was quoted as saying if Bonds broke the record, he hopes #71 gets lost in McCovey Cove.

MacFarlane is the guy who paid $3 million to buy McGwire's 70th HR ball.

I got the gist. I'm just a stickler for historical accuracy.

No problem. I just remember the frenzy around their run but didn't have any books of facts in front of me when I wrote.

Trachsel and Pavano have to be rooting hard for Bonds, too, I would imagine.
