Default Ted Williams Award

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0115/1493295.html

Alex Rodriguez has won the first ever Ted Williams Award, given to the game's "best hitter." Undeserved award? Maybe... and what's worse:
Quote:
The award will be presented at the Boston BBWAA's annual dinner Thursday night. Rodriguez will not be able to accept in person.
tsk, tsk...

Maybe the Ted Williams award should be for the AL, while maybe Willie Mays of Stan Musial award for the NL (not that we need more awards)

I thought they gave the Hank Aaron award for best hitter.
Nobody's going to care about whatever they call this award though, baseball does such a bad job in promoting though and also in announcing them. Why do we have to wait 3+ months? At least when the NFL gives out frivolous awards, Offensive POY and Defensive POY for example, they do it when this postseason is going or at the very least when the season is still fresh in our minds.

this is not a MLB award. It will be given annually by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America to honor Williams.

Well, that explains a lot. So, really, it's an award given to the "Best Hitter Boston Sportswriters Remember Seeing at Fenway".

i.e. A Joke. Whose only purpose is to devalue other awards, whether or not they deserve devaluing. The Tedsicle is probably pissed ... or maybe not. Who cares. I hate this cr*p.

Strong words, Skip!

Seriously, does this award really deserve such venom? I don't think its "only purpose is to devalue other awards;" there is probably a legitimate desire to honor Ted Williams there too. And if no one pays attention to it, except perhaps the Boston writers and the player honored, it doesn't do any harm.

Nothing wrong with local award things. They so not become part of the statistical legacy and are generally ignored when evaluating a player.

I hope c*ap isn't venom. Otherwise I have a venom-filled life! I just hate awards that seem intended to bring attention to the organization giving them more than the recipient ... though thats obviously a very cynical approach in today's marketplace.

I wonder what the purpose of this dinner is that the Boston writers are hosting. Is it for some charitable purpose, or just to full their coffers.

If I wanted to, I could start an organization, honor a big name, give him an award, and put pressure on him to come down, in order to sell tickets for whatever. If the big name doesn't show, he risks looking like a heel to somebody for at least a small period of time.

This is pretty funny - - and somewhat related. You know we have a NetShrine Player of the Year: http://www.netshrine.com/npoty.html

Someone, I think it was mainsr, once wrote that I should invite Barry Bonds to NetShrine WHQ (aka my study) to pick up his award - - - and, when he declines to show, write about what a snob he is............it would be easy, no?
