With two outs and a runner on first Ron Leflore hits a shot into the Left-center field gap and it rolls to the wall.
In racing to from home to third LeFlore completely missed second based. This fact was noticed by the defensive team and LeFlore had every reason to believe by the 2B umpire. LeFlore knew that if he was called out on appeal at 2B the run that had scored from first would be disallowed. As the defensive announced it was going to appeal at 2B what did LeFlore in hopes that the run WOULD count.

That seems logical. It's wrong, but logical.

He took off for home, hoping to get tagged out before the appeal was made in hopes they wouldn't actually make the appeal.

RC, is so close to the right answer thatwe'll go with it.
He took off for home in the hope the pitcher would throw home rather than to second. In doing an appeal once you annonce your intention to appeal that is what you must do. In this case the pitcher was so flustered he threw to in time to tag out LeFlore, but this negated the appeal and the original run remained on the board. Had LeFlore beaten the throw his run would have counted too!!!! That's why he wasn't hoping to be tagged out.
