Stones
...its apples and oranges for me,and i love both. the beatles were brilliant, yet their genius put a distance between themselves and others. The stones were the not nearly as talented kids who were smoking in the bathroom and always getting caught. Purely from a rocking point, the stones...

Hey ... I thought this thread was my suggestion.
My vote: Beatles the way things turned out. Stones, if the Beatles hadn't broken up. I think the Stones were relevant longer than the Beatles would have been ... even if they hadn't broken up they were over. The breakup gave them the "never again" cachet that Joplin, Hendrix, and numerous others have also benefited from. I probably like more Beatles songs than Stones songs (though maybe not, maybe the Beatles just come to mind faster), but the Beatles are defined more by 'pop' and the Stones by 'rock', at least to me. |

Skip, I referred to pw for the omission in his thread that just screamed for an answer, then re-read the thread and saw your suggestion. So, this one's for you...
Funny, I think "Exile on Main Street" is the greatest rock album, period. The Beatles follow with, like, the next five. I have to give the nod to the lads from Liverpool. They absolutely defined their era, and the music the made (with the exception of "The Magical Mystery Tour") was nearly flawless and miles ahead of the rest. Would they have run out of gas before the Stones? Well... they DID run out of gas. (That said, the Stones haven't broken any significant ground in a long, long time). I'll buy the apple/orange thing, too. Still, they're the two bands most often mentioned in the same breath. Now, hm, about Queen... |

Ok, more succinctly:
Most influential pop OR rock-n-roll band: Beatles Greatest rock-n-roll band: Stones |

Beatles worst record (besides Yellow Submarine) was "Let It Be", which is 1 1/2 miles better than "Satanic Majesty" or "Goat's Head Soup" or "Undercover" or "Steel Wheels".
Queen? Now, I'll admit I like "Sheer Heart Attack" (especially the first side) quite a bit, but some of the records devolve into pretentious goofiness just this side of Yes. |

I would pick the Beatles as the most influential My favorite rock n' roll band would be Creedence Clearwater Revival or Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band

I agree completely with this comment. The Stones, even at their best, couldn't come close to touching the Beatles. |

The Beatles. Not even close. They were and still are light years beyond anyone else, although I doubt even they could have kept up at that level had they stayed together in the seventies and beyond.....

as for this poll, I'd take the Beatles for peak value, the Stones for career value.

So now I've picked nits between favorite, greatest, and most influential. Have I killed this thread, or totally sidetracked it, or just added juice to the sauce? Remember, the original topic is Beatles v. Stones folks. |

P.S. (sidebar) If you look elsewhere you'll note I've changed my tune a bit since my list of 'greatest' on the 'Greatest American R&R band' thread includes CCR. Dad-gummit - it is hard to separate great from favorite from influential from ....
