It was the 4th time Martinez led the league. He also led the NL in 1997 and the AL in 1999-2000. It was the 9th time Johnson led the league. He also led the AL in 1992-95 and 1997 and the NL in 1999-2001.

Johnson broke the record with 11.30, from 1993-95, before raising it to 12.34 (1995-97) and then to 12.66. It was the 3rd consecutive time Martinez led the AL. Martinez's 12.51 SO/9 IP, from 1999-2001, is the AL record. Prior to active players, the record was 10.75, by Nolan Ryan, from 1989-91. Randy Johnson broke the record with 11.30, from 1993-95, and raised it to 12.34, from 1995-97, before Martinez broke the record. Are K/9 really taking a fall in the AL? Only 7 guys with more than 7 Ks per 9 innings? Compared to double that in the NL.
