The Trade with The 4-Way Hips
Lee reports in the ATM:

How the heck do the A's get Durazo for a PTBNL? That's robbery, no? Is Lopez just Larkin insurance?

I assume Beane gets the credit for orchestrating this amazing meeting of the minds. Four teams! has that ever happened before? It really is a coup. A slight increase in value, perhaps, at each level in the chain; if Beane had gotten a few more teams involved he might have snagged A-Rod for his PTBNL!

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports Oakland is also sending prospects Jason Arnold and John-Ford Griffin to Toronto.
This makes it all a pretty fair deal, IMHO. If it's true.

Lopez will either play second, replacing Walker, or take short with Larkin shifting to second. I like Lopez as a player, but wonder why the Reds parted with a rotation member. No doubt it's a money saver.

We finally get to see what Durazo will do in a full season.

Why do trades like this always seem to involve Billy Beane? I guess I'm goint to have to start going to more A's games. A lineup with Durazo, Tejada, and Chavez? Wow!!!

First he upgrades Koch into Foulke, now he adds Erubiel Durazo for future considerations? Has anyone ever said words to the effect that Billy Beane is, like, smart? 'Cause I think he might be.
Actually, this move looks good for everybody. The Snakes get a pitcher who will look pretty good in the third slot. Dessens's great year - career year, probably - would have generated unrealistic expectations in any other situation, but in Arizona he just has to avoid sucking worse than Rick Helling. He should be able to do that. The Reds are selling high to get a needed piece for their present and future, at the cost of a guy they shined into gold off of the scrap heap. They have too many guys who could start - Fernandez, Graves, Haynes (why I couldn't tell you), Reidling, Reitsma, and others that my memory is crapping out on, so they're dealing from a surplus. Finally, the Jays already announced their starting SS for 2003, and it wasn't Lopez. So, J.P. is hoping to avail himself again, Hinske-style, of the riches in the A's system. Everybody gets what they need and deals surplus. Sense is made in the world, huh? |

The D'Backs got Dessens and cash, and still got the short end. But this one should help all four teams.

I thin Arizona could have got more for Durazo. I like what the Reds have done. They traded Todd Walker and then got a young guy with good potential to fill in at 2b.

I'm excited about the Jays getting player-to-be-named-later. I've always thought he was underutilized in Oakland, and I hope he gets a fair shot in Toronto.

Well, sure, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about him, given how many teams have already given up on him. I mean, it seems like he's mentioned in every deal.

I don't know about Durazo. He's going to be 29, has a career OPS over .900, and yet has never stayed healthy enough to have a single season with 225 at bats.
His numbers are the kind that would drive Beane into a frenzy, though. Are the prospects he gave up bona fide?
