the Pads have an exciting core of prospects working their way to the top level, looking to complement stars like Ryan Klesko and Phil Nevin. their offseason transactions have mostly dealt with complimentary players. what can the Pads do to compete now in the tight NL west? is their future the brightest of the division?
C Gonzalez, Rivera, Bennett* 1B Nevin 2B Loretta* SS Vazquez 3B Burroughs LF Trammell CF Kotsay RF Klesko IF Hansen*, Cruz*, Flores OF Buchanan SP Lawrence, Perez, Peavy, Tollberg, Tankersley, Jarvis, Eaton, Condrey, Wright*, Cordova* RP Hoffman, Orosco*, Witasick*, Hackman*, Villafuerte, Bynum, Walker

I wouldn't count 'em out - I think the kids can play.
Arizona is old, the Giants didn't get any better, and the Rockies, well..... |

I'm with Smed ... Perez could be VERY special. They have several kids coming up at the positions where they'd best fit (2B, OF) and so much pitching depth that they'll be able to trade some of it to patch any holes they end up with.

If Burroughs bounces back and has a decent season and if they find someone who has a pulse to replace Bubba in LF, the Padres could have a very good season. 85 wins is a realistic goal.

As long as San Diego has enough revenue to stay close to the Dodgers and Giants and Dbacks in terms of payroll then this should be a good team in a couple of years. Loretta is a decent stop gap until they can find a young guy to take over. I would keep doing what they are doing, hope the pitchers pan out and try to build a contending team.

There's a lot to like about this team, IF the pitchers can do the job. If three of the rotation kids burst onto the scene, they will win the division.

I've got the Diamondbacks finally getting too old for their own good, the Giants and Dodgers lack of anybody other than Bonds and Green with any power respectively, and the Rockies complete incapability to transfer into a surprisingly good season for the Pads. I think they'll finish 2nd to the Giants, and contend for the Wild Card.

I don't think it's the Pads' year to contend yet, plus they're making Nevin move again (this time to LF)... a lot will rest on how well their young players produce and whether they are able to avoid injuries, especially to their pitching staff.

The Padres are sunk. They just signed Keith Lockhart.
Aside from that flight of fancy, there's a lot to like here. Phil Nevin and Ryan Klesko power the offense, and there looks to be help on the way from Sean Burroughs. Xavier Nady and Khalil Greene are in the wings. The young pitching is superbly talented. The only question is, who is ready to go into a major league rotation? Brett Tomko is gone, and his 200 innings will have to be picked up by someone. This team is likely to win the division by 2005. But not this year. I predict the Padres will win 70-75 games. |

Tankersly and Peavy are fine prospects. If some of the other prospects come thru in the field (Burroughs et al), this could be a real fine team. Lawrence is a legit top pitcher. Nevin and Klesko still have a few years left.
BTW - If Hoffman is out an extended period and Witasick doesn't pan out.....watch for Tankersly in the closer role. |
