It was the 3rd time that Martinez led the AL. He also led in 1999-2000. It was the 8th time that Johnson led his league. He led the AL in 1992-95 and the NL in 1999-2001 (he also led the majors with his combined total in 1998.

Johnson's 1083 SO, from 1999-2001, set the major league record, breaking the mark of 1079, by Nolan Ryan, from 1972-74. It was the 3rd consecutive time that Martinez led the AL. LAST 4 YEARS (SINCE 1999) MAJORS--Randy Johnson, 1417 AL--Pedro Martinez, 999 NL--Randy Johnson, 1417 It was the 3rd consecutive time and 9th time that Johnson led the majors and the 2nd consecutive time Johnson led the NL (he also led the AL 5 times). Johnson's 1417 SO broke his own major league record of 1412, from 1998-2001. Prior to Johnson, the record was 1265, by Nolan Ryan, from 1972-75. Johnson broke the record with 1331, from 1997-2000, before raising it to 1412 and then to 1417. It was the 2nd consecutive time that Martinez led the AL. It was the 3rd consecutive time that Schilling led the NL. The only player with a higher NL figure than Schilling was Sandy Koufax--twice, record of 1713, from 1961-66. Johnson's 2122 SO were the 2nd highest in major league history, behind Nolan Ryan's 2193, from 1972-78. It was the 4th consecutive time and 9th time that Clemens led the AL. It was the 3rd consecutive time that Schilling led the NL. Schilling's 1730 SO were the most in the NL since Tom Seaver's 1751, from 1970-76. Johnson's 2928 SO broke his own major league record of 2835, from 1992-2001. Prior to Johnson, the record was 2756, by Nolan Ryan, from 1972-81. It was the 11th consecutive time that Clemens led the AL. Clemens is the 2nd player to lead his league at least 10 times, joining Walter Johnson (16 consecutive). It was the 2nd consecutive time that Schilling led the NL. Schilling's 2088 SO were the most in the NL since Steve Carlton's 2148, from 1975-84.
