LAST 4 YEARS (SINCE 1999) MAJORS--Vinny Castilla, -119 AL--Cristian Guzman, -101 NL--Marquis Grissom, -109 It was the 2nd consecutive time Grissom led the NL. LAST 5 YEARS (SINCE 1998) MAJORS--Deivi Cruz, -139 AL--Deivi Cruz, -107 NL--Rey Ordonez, -135 It was the 2nd consecutive time Cruz led the AL. It was the 4th consecutive time Ordonez led the NL. LAST 6 YEARS (SINCE 1997) MAJORS--Deivi Cruz, -180 AL--Deivi Cruz, -148 NL--Rey Ordonez, -175 It was the 2nd consecutive time Cruz led the AL. It was the 4th consecutive time Ordonez led the NL. Ordonez's -175 OUTS AVOIDANCE was the worst in the NL since Doug Glynn's -178, from 1977-82 (Andres Thomas also had -175, from 1985-90). LAST 7 YEARS (SINCE 1996) MAJORS--Rey Ordonez, -202 AL--Deivi Cruz, -148 NL--Rey Ordonez, -202 It was the 2nd consecutive time Ordonez led the majors and the 4th consecutive time he led the NL. This is an interesting stat - like most pitcher losses, or career GIDP totals, it's a negative stat, but the leaders have to be players who get lots of playing time. If you look at just the last three years, they are players most NDF'ers would agree do not deserve the playing time they get. But the all time leaders are a weirder story. You have to have a long career to rack up a high outs total.

There is a big difference between a bad figure in this stat and a high L or GIDP total. You can run up a high L or GIDP total just by getting a lot of playing time. But, in order to run up a high bad OA figure, you need to be lousy. Just getting a lot of playing time isn't going to do it. In fact, if you're not lousy, getting a lot of playing time is going to sabotage your chances of being on the negative list. If you're good at avoiding outs, the playing time is going to help you run up a positive figure.
