If only MLB could explain it that easily.

if we do have crazy playoff matchups, i wonder whether they could end up making the difference in the determination of mvp and cya awards...

If they have to have tie-breaker games those count toward regular season marks so I guess the answer is I guess. Aren't the ballots for the various awards expected to be post marked on or by the last day of the regularly scheduled season?

NL Central: Quote:
I personally want the example where there's a 5-way tie between the three NL east teams, the Phillies, and the Expos. In this case, an NL East team could win a game (division A vs. B), lose a game (vs. C), then win two more to make the playoffs as a wild card. Even better, as the road team in four different cities in four straight days!

it's not inconsistent. you're comparing a tie between TWO teams in the AL east with a tie among THREE teams in the NL central

They have to play the second game in the NL Central scenario, otherwise the Cubs would win the division based only on their divisional record. If that was the case, then why not give the team with the second-best divisional record the wildcard? That doesn't seem fair.
I think each team has to earn that top spot on the field. |

They seem to bending over backwards to avoid the disqualification of someone who tied for a division lead and also tied for the wild card to be eliminated based on a single playoff game. Which is the right thing to do, but 50 years from now it will look kind of funny in the record books.

KC - note that MLB has changed the rules (without telling anyone - shocker, eh?) and that tiebreaker playoff games are NOT considered regular season. Christian makes note of this in a couple spots.

In the past they were, so it was easy to assume this. What the heck category will they go in now? It's not "post season", is it? Or is it?

I think that would be pre-post-season. Or something.
Actually, if I am remembering correctly, the playdown games would count in stats, but not in the records for the regular seasons. Yes? No? |

They count neither in stats or in record. Consider them baseball in a vacuum.
