Default Should the Braves attempt to sign Edgardo Alfonzo?

Now that it appears that the Mets have Tom Glavine, should the Braves try to sign Edgardo Alfonzo?

Let's look at the reasons they should, and the reasons they shouldn't.

The Braves SHOULD sign Alfonzo because:

1. His signing will hurt a division rival.

2. He is an immediate improvement in the infield, at either 3B or 2B.

3. His price is affordable.

The Braves SHOULDN'T sign Alfonzo because:

1. They have a glut of middle infielders, and their problem is more one of sorting them out and making a commitment, rather than a lack of talent.

2. Alfonzo is more valuble at 2B, but the Braves have bigger holes at 1B and 3B, the latter of which Alfonzo can play, but is less valuble at.

I'd sign him, and put him at 2B. What would YOU do, if you were John Sheurholz? (Hint: Don't say "I'd offer an 2 year deal to Buddy Biancalana! )

Tough question, and I think it all depends on whether he's completely healthy. If so, then he's an upgrade in the Braves' middle infield, and a guy who could help the middle of their lineup. It seemed to me that his power definitely improved in the second half of last season, so maybe he's back. If he's not healthy, I'd take a pass.

I think it would also depend on what type of contract he's looking for. I wouldn't provide too much in terms of length, simply because his health is an unknown at this point.

take him, put him at 2B, and trade a pair of your MIF's for help in the other areas

He would certainly be an upgrade, but if the Braves would just put DeRosa at 2B and Giles at 3B, they would get a slightly smaller upgrade for a much lower price.

As much as I like him, he appears to be in an early decline (mostly because of injuries) and looking for big money. The Braves have quite a few infield prospects and it doesn't make much sense to block one when their trying to freshen up the team with youth.

I think I'll pass on Edgardo. He doesn't seem to be worth the money he will probably want.

Is he the new Carlos Baerga?

If I was the Braves I would take a pass on Alfonzo and try to improve elsewhere. The Braves have decent alternatives in the middle infield and would do better to find a 1B or 3B that can hit.

Alfonzo actually didn't have a bad year last year... .812 OPS is pretty good, especially if you can play him on the middle infield.

Can Giles handle 3B? Does he have the arm for it?

I thought Wilson Betemit was slated for that spot - or has he fallen off the lists?

Now that he's a G-man, this is moot.
