Great work Shawn.

Amazing, huh? 38 years ago, they feared this - - and, the next 14 years were some of the worst in Yankee history. And, IMHO, the jury is still out on this - - TBS has helped the Braves, but, WGN and FOX aren't exactly making powerhouses out of the Cubs and Dodgers...........

Good work. 1964 marked the first time the Yankees had lost consecutive World Series since 1921-1922, an amazing run considering the frequency with which the Yankees had appeared in the World Series.

I am not sure but it may be the first time that third basemen swept league MVP honors

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears

Thumbs up

Wonderful reading. Nice touch to be able to include your birthday in the essay. I had no idea that Robin Roberts was still pitching effectively for the Orioles and had lost all memory of Dave Wickersham.

Amazing what neat stuff we learn from reading these. Thanks !!!

1964 was an unusual year. It stood as a transition year on several fronts. The change in Presidents was most profound. The Civil Rights movement was getting serious as more of the white majority at least understood that what they had been doing was wrong. Viet Nam was beginning to become a little more visible on the national radar screen. The U.S. continued to trail in the space race but was finally starting to show signs of getting on the ball. It also marked the end of the Yankee dynasty that had stood for forty plus years.

A very nice article.

Nice work.

This is one of those races that seems to get lost in the shuffle. Funny how there were so many "transitions" in and around '64.

Wow! Thanks!You brought to life a season I have heard a 1000 x!
Old men love to retell various seasons for whatever reasons and this was one of them.

Seems like in this part of town everyone has an all Sox family and one Yank or all Yank family and Sox fan.......so strange.

Good job. I really like the harmonica anecdote as a snapshot of ballplayers as just these guys getting through another working day.

I really enjoyed it, Shaun. 1964 was the year I graduated from college and started law school, so a lot of these events had special meaning for me. It was great to relive them
