Angry NYT: Torre On The Line

"Liberated" this off Lee's ATM report today:

The New York Times reports "if the Yankees do not perform well in October, Steinbrenner will seriously consider replacing both Torre and Cashman. Buck Showalter, the former Yankees manager who was fired by the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, would probably be the front-runner to replace Torre."

- - Thought it could be a good thread topic.

Is this the silliest thing ever reported by the NY Times?

Buzz, Chris which way do I go?

Think any of this has to do with Torre's contract being up and the price he's seeking ($3 mill a year)?

Funny they pick Showalter. Some think that he set this team up and Torre is just riding the car he built. Mind games for Joe?

Default I would take them in a heart beat!!!

That was the best trip from Fantasy Land! But you know I have seen some owners (or guardians of trusts), do some really stupid things.

Torre and Cashman! I wouldn't even have to quit smoking to see the RS win a world series in my life time. WOW!

Reality check, quitting smoking will really S--K!

I have to agree with Net's confusion here.

I agree with what both Buzz and Chris said.

So, I'll say I'm absolutely certain that George will let Torre and Cashman go, unless he doesn't.

Well, if Torre did leave, they could do a lot worse than Showalter (e.g. - George Costanza) He is an excellent player development kind of guy, and they're going to have a lot of young talent on the Yankees in the near future.

Lee.

Duque - - "a lot" of young talent? Where? Posada, Soriano, Jeter, Williams should all be back. Other than Nick Johnson, maybe, where will they be green?

Well, Drew Henson figures to be ready by 2003, Brandon Claussen or Alex Graman might get a look next year, as will Juan Rivera and maybe Marcus Thames. A lot of guys I've read suggest John-Ford Griffin could also be ready for 2003.

Ah, THIS is the stuff I live for.................

Henson first has to hit in AAA before any timetable can be established. Thames, is old for a prospect, and this is the first time he's hit in AA in 3 tries. Claussen and Graman? See Kiesler and Lilly. Griffin looks REAL good - - but, he still has zero ABs beyond A-ball. Rivera still needs to do it for a full season at AAA.

We (Yankee fans) are looking at another 3 years before these guys are "players." Let's talk about replacing Torre then....

Henson is one of those "power hitters" who hasn't hit for power.

Minor league performance is a much better indicator of who could be a good major leaguer than the hype of scouting reports. And I hate to say this, but Henson hasn't given any indication that he's close to the majors.

How long, then, before Drew realizes he could be starting QB in the NFL and bolt the minor leagues?

He'll probably pull a Chris Weinke (sic?) and go back to college first, say around 2003, no?

Now now - I didn't say they should replace Torre. I said if they were to replace Torre, they could do a whole lot worse. You know, like propping up Billy Martin a la Weekend at Bernie's.
