Ok, another question...and ANY info on this would be very helpful. I'm wondering if there are any biographies of the Waner brothers, either together or individually. I've checked Amazon and the other large book outlets. Thanks.

Funny you should ask. There's been no book, as far as I know, dedicated strictly to the Waners. However, in December, there is this book being released from McFarland:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...209964-6584628 I'm planning on reading this one. You might want to check that one out. I believe it's the first one to focus only on them. |

Great find, Craig! There are a number of Pirates histories out there that would no doubt include significant material on the Waners, but I can recall no book available now that is dedicated just to Lloyd and Paul.

I'm tickled pink about this book coming out. In 1979, when I was 14, Lloyd Waner allowed me to interview him. Since then, I've put the interview on CD. He was a fine gentleman, & treated me like I was the top writer for The Sporting News. What a thrill that was for me.

Information only:
The Waner's are from my hometown of Harrah, Ok. The little league park is named for them and their sister still lives here. al |

Just started this one last night, after picking it up cheap from a MacFarland vendor at a conference. Sounds like a labor of love, since Parker grew up hearing tales of the Waners.
As an aside, I found out that MacFarland will be reprinting several titles that have been out of print for a long time, including an autobiography from King Kelly. Not sure when they'll release an official list, but there could be some interesting reads. |

Finished this one last night. Once I actually had some time to dedicate to it, it went pretty quick. A nice mix of research work and oral history, both by the Waners and former players and managers.
I didn't realize there was such a difference lifestyle-wise between the brothers. Paul seems to have been very much the partier, with Lloyd being the more straight-laced one, although they were both complete professionals between the lines. And gosh, those Pirate teams were absolutely loaded with offensive talent. If they'd had even average pitching to go along with that offense, they could have done a lot more damage. Good read for anyone interested in the Waners, especially considering that they've been largely ignored by biographers. |

Above comments are very accurate. This was a really good read. Paul Waner is one of the most underrated great players of all time.

Regarding the Waner's sister living in Harrah still: When I intervivewed Lloyd Waner back in 1979, he said that she was the best ballplayer in the family.
