Red face Rumored Mets-Rockies Deal

Just heard on ESPN radio - I only got the tail end - that the Mets and Rockies are talking about Ordonez and Burnitz for Neagle.

Michael Kay of ESPN Radio in NY thought this would be a steal for the Mets.

He could be right.

i guess it depends on how much of neagle's salary colorado would pick up. why would anyone want burnitz and ordonez, though? does o'dowd owe steve phillips for something?

Did I hear somewhere that the Mets are talking about bringing the fences in? I think I did. If so, this is a little scary for Mets fans, I'd think. Although Neagle should be able to scrape up 10 or 11 wins. Burnitz is probably a prototypical Coors hitter; big K numbers, capable of 40 HR's there and could drive in well over 100. Ordonez -- well, sure, take him as a defensive throw-in and go after Jose Hernandez.

I'd say the Rockies would win this deal on Burnitz alone.

I couldn't disagree more!

My disagreement is based on my negative opinion of Burnitz, who, in my opinion, is finished. He'll be garbage away from Coors, and he strikes out too much to maximize his usefulness at home in Coors. (Coors Field favors guys who can put the bat on the ball; if the Rox acquired Ichiro and Nomar, they may be the 1st team in history to have TWO .400 hitters in the history of modern baseball.)

I also think that Neagle's Coors numbers aren't awful. He will be a servicable pitcher in NY if he ends up there; he'll recover from the shellacking even Koufax would experience at Coors.

If you think Burnitz still has it, I might agree, but I think he's done, in much the same manner that Kevin McReynolds was at a similar age.

As for Ordonez, he can't hit, AND his glove is overrated. That's like having no personality AND no looks.

This may be the first intelligent thing Steve Phillips has done in a long time.

I agree, but Burnitz could succeed in Colorado, and Ordonez well he stinks anywhere. Neagle could be ok outside Denver, and allready survived NY media once.

A deal concerning two teams no one will really care about in August and players descending down the slippery slope of ignomity.

Smed, happy accident or intentional, I think you've coined a great word in ignomity -- I'd define it as a combination of ignominy and anonymity.

on what kinds of pitches does Burnitz usually strikeout? if he has problems hitting breaking stuff, for example, his K numbers may go down in altitude

Neagle probably has the most upside of the players in this trade, though at the price he's hardly worth it. Neagle himself will be the real winner if this goes through, because a fly-ball pitcher like him has no business pitching in Coors.

o'dowd has said that he realized that his latest idea for coors (speed and pitching) didn't work out....that speed only helps defensively up the middle and that they need power production from the corners. so he wants to trade away larry walker and trade for matt williams, rubi durazo, and jeromy burnitz?
