OK, OK. I'm convinced.
Sure, it was only the Cowboys, but Donovan McNabb is now the quarterback Andy Reid and the Eagles dreamed he could be when he was the No. 2 overall pick four years ago. I had thought McNabb a great but flawed player, but he is throwing the ball downfield, streching the defenses, hitting receivers in stride, shrugging off the blitz and, on occasion, ripping off huge plays with his legs. Craig S. was ahead of me on this one. |

As a Syracuse fan I love seeing McNabb as the best in the league. The scary thing is he's still getting better.

he's great. im very impressed.
i do think, however, that he's starting to approach his ceiling. not that i'd be complaining if i were an eagles fan, but i don't think he can be THAT much better. (michael vick, for example, has a much higher ceiling IMO). |

Which is to say what, McNabb has the same ceiling as John Elway?
Three TD passes, including picture-perfect strikes of 35 and 59 yards, no INTs, spreads the ball around, two rushes for over 25 yards...I'll take 16 more of those this year. |

McNabb had a nice game, but as you said it was against the Cowboys.

McNabb is impressive. I don't know that I'd hand him an MVP trophy yet, tho. He may yet prove to be Randall Cunningham, version 2.0.

Any quarterback who puts up a "44" against Dallas is okay in my book !!!!!

I wasn't advocating McNabb for MVP just yet, although I felt he deserved it two years ago. The comparison to Randall is somewhat worrisome, however: 1. Randall had a hell of a career: 30,000 (ok 29,979) yards passing, 207-134 TD-INT ratio, all-time leading rusher. 2. Other than being black, mobile quarterbacks for the Eagles, they're really not the same player. Randall didn't play in a structured offensive system until he was 32 years old. McNabb was groomed specifically for the system he's in now at age 22. McNabb has far superior discipline and a better feel for the rush. In the past two weeks, he's hit more guys in stride than Randall probably did in his entire career. |

Hey! I loved Randall as much as a non-Eagles fan could. And McNabb is a super-talent. But there is a legit comparison between the two, and not just because they are both black, mobile QB's for the Eagles. Granted, McNabb is/has developed very nicely into an elite player - but he has no running game (other than himself), something that also hurt Randall. McNabb has also been plagued by bad-decision making at times - something that led to Randall's ultimate downfall as an elite QB. As for "system", McNabb has adopted and flourished in Andy Reid's system. However, if the Eagles underacheive this year or next, Reid may be gone, leaving McNabb to learn another "system".
I'm pulling for McNabb to be great, to take his game to the next level. To do that, he has to win a Super Bowl. Let's check back on this in February. |

It would take a monumental collapse for Andy Reid to get fired.

and it's not like he's the only guy running that system...I think there are 21 teams using some form of the West Coast offense?

Maybe. However if the Eagles fail to "get over the hump" in the next two years, Reid may find someone escorting him to the door. This is not to imply that I think Andy Reid is a bad coach; on the contrary, I think he's very good. But he does not "shop for the groceries" very well (to steal a phrase from Tuna Parcells). The episode with Trotter was (correctly) lambasted by the media. Another high-profile player to have a public falling out with Reid could spell the end of Reid. Remember, in the sports pecking order, it goes SUPERSTAR then HEAD COACH. Further, Reid's draft record has been spotty and his FA pickups have been better than terrible but certainly not great. If the Eagles slump or collapse, Reid's gone quicker than I can type his name. And then he'll find another job, because he's a very good coach, but not a very good personnel director or GM. As for the "West Coast" offense, 21 (or some number) of teams may run it now, but if defenses catch up to it, you can be sure 21 teams will be running a different offense right quick. Besides, what offense were the Eagles running when Cunningham was in town? The wishbone? The run-and-shoot? The flava-of-the-week? There are numerous schemes that work in the NFL and I'm reasonably sure that someone of McNabb's talent would fit into any offense that *suited his talents*. |
