Question This Young Man, He's Got Tremendous Upside

I was wondering what the consensus was on Hubie Brown as coach of the Grizzlies, especially when he has to deal with:

A. Jason Williams throwing the ball all over the place
B. Shane Battier playing down to the level of a CBA player
C. Paul Gasol not getting enough quality touches
and D. No one else on the roster that could make the 1975 Kentucky Colonels which had:

A. Artis Gilmore in his prime.
B. Louis Dampier hitting the long jumper which opened up things for Gilmore and...
C. Dan Issel as tough a player as you want and
D. Bird Averitt distributing the ball like you want.

Just curious??

I think that any team that has Jason Williams as their point guard will not be a good team no matter what. I am surprised that West went with Hubie. It would seem to be an odd match for a young team.

I am rooting against the Grizzlies all year because the Pistons get their #1 pick if it isn't the first overall.

I don't like the choice. Can't really say why though,

Maybe West's thinking is that Brown can teach the Grizzlies a few things. He certainly can't do any worse than Lowe. Given West's record with the Lakers, I figure Jerry knows what he's doing.....

I don't think Jerry West expects Brown to win. Instead, I think he wants him to teach the young guys some fundamentals, especially concerning the benefits of teamwork. At his age, and with his experience, I don't think night after night of losing will affect Hubie as it might a younger coach who's still trying to prove his worth.

Shane Battier was a very mature player for his age last season, so I don't think that his upside is all that high. He'll be a solid player, but I really don't see him developing his offensive moves enough to make him a star.

And can anyone imagine what it would be like playing high school basketball on a team with Jason Williams and Randy Moss? They likely couldn't fit the other players on the court, due to a couple of enormous egos.

Hubie's inconcievable (at times) rants were about the only thing worth watching in the NBA if you didn't have some vested interest in a team.

Let's just hope they can mike him.

If you were anyone else on that team I doubt you were getting many passes anyways.

As I understand it, the other three guys were there to play defense.

I wonder if those guys received instructions like:
"On Offense just stay out of Jason and Randy's way"
"On Defense just stay out of Jason and Randy's way"
"If you shoot the ball you are off the team"
"Bob... Randy and Jason cut class and got in a fight. Run 30 laps."

The Kings deserve a big pat on the back for dealing away Jason Williams. Dumping him would have been better than keeping him, and the fact that they got an excellent PG in return makes the deal even better.

I think Hubie will be an excellent coach. With the new core of Gooden, Gasol and Battier, they are fine people who will be receptive to good coaching and less concerned about whether the coach can "relate" to them. This is not good new for JWill. Maybe he'll like it with the Knicks.

You really think Williams and Moss played defense? Certainly not on every play. The other three guys got to do the dirty work.
