From the ATM report:
15) The A's are considering a Billy Koch for Byung-Hyun Kim and Erubiel Durazo deal, with Kim maybe going into the rotation. Another steal for the A's? |

Since I've felt for a while, the D-backs shoudl put Kim in the rotation, and a good starter is always better than a good closer, I'd jump on this deal as Beane. Durazo could give them a 1st baseman/dh to hit around Tejada and Chavez. Kim would look darn good as the #4 starter in Oakland.

I'm skeptical of Kim as a starter...doesn't he usually get hit when batters have a chance to see his delivery a second time around?

Trading Billy Koch is always a good idea. He throws the straightest 98-mph fastball in baseball, and he can't locate any other pitches.
Good deal for the A's if they can pull it off. |

Arizona is kind of a strange team. They trade Jack Cust to Colorado for a lefty setup man when they probably could have gotten a lot more from a AL team. Kim is probably a better closer than Koch is and is cheaper. Throw in Durazo and it doesn't make sense. Can I interest the Diamondbacks in Bobby Higginson?

After Johnson and Schilling retire, the D-Backs will be D-Ray-esque...

If they A's can pick up Durazo they can be confident that the DL will always be occupied.

I used to think Durazo would be an amazing player if the D-Backs traded him somewhere where he could play every day. If they'd done that one or two offseasons ago, they might have gotten huge value for him. Now, I think it might be too late.
I'm not sure I'd want to see the A's make this trade. I agree with the poster who suggested that Kim might not make a great starter. Koch, on the other hand, is a versatile and excellent setup/closer combination - he can handle more innings than the average closer and his stuff is electric. I wonder, is Macha wary of using Koch the way Howe did, for frequent 4+ out saves? And would Brenly use him that way?

I think Kim is better than Koch, so the A's would already be ahead, and if Durazo is on the DL a lot, at least he gives you astonishing power when he's in the lineup.

another thing to take into consideration is that Kim may be cheaper. Koch is arbitration-eligible, after making $2.4 million last season. Kim's deal which just expired was $2.4 million over 4 yrs.
2002 Kim 72 G, 84 IP, 2.04 ERA, 9.9 K/9, 3.5 K/BB, .556 OOPS Koch 84 G, 93.2 IP, 3.27 ERA, 9.0 K/9, 2.0 K/BB, .617 OOPS

i think there is a legitimate question about Kim's future and his effectiveness against lefties and in big spots but then, Koch ain't no Dennis Eck.
honestly, I can't believe Arizona would even consider this. are they that dumb? |

If this is the deal, Beane will have yet another "feather in his cap." Kim was an All-Star last year and throws amazing stuff. Koch does throw the straightest fastball since Van Poppel was around and at the end he was throwing 94. Getting Durazo would be great for the A's, a power hitting 1B with a high average. He would also get along well with the Latins in the A's clubhouse (unabashed stereotype.)

Koch is in the wrong place and the wrong time. I would love to see another team with another approach get a crack at him. He needs a good rehab specialist. Tony C could do it. Grady Little and Tony C could do it.
