Default Run Barry Run

Not to point the finger at Barry, he is not the only one who does this. They did not play like this years ago and I don't know why managers never get on these hitters. They hit the ball, they think it's gone, most times it is, but not always, they stand at home to admire thier work. This could cost a team the game.
I saw Barry in one interview bring up the point that Babe Ruth had consecutive seasons where he slugged for an .800 percentage and how he just missed out with .799. I wonder if Barry remembers that game this season when he hit a drive, looked like it was gone, stood there to watch it, it hit the wall. Barry turned a sure double into a single. Barry ended the season with 322 total bases and a .799 slugging percentage. Had he ran out that hit and made the double he would have finished with 323 total bases and an .801 slugging percentage.

This, the phantom tag of second on a DP, batter between-pitch rituals, and random strike zones are all pet peeves. I'm a fan of Barry, but when he stands and watches a single carom off the wall, I can do nothing but laugh/cry/curse.

I hate when players (not just Barry does this) that watch homers and then get stuck with singles when they didn't run. Go slow after the umpire says its gone or you see it enter the stands. Not until.

I also really hate the phantom tag at second.

i agree shoelessjoe.

nonetheless, i'd rather barry stare at his homers but continue his VERY QUICK batters box practice than vice versa.

Unhappy Whats worse?

...watching Barry stand and pose or debating his merits/demerits? Might be a push.bob Gibson would have hit him in the head on the on deck circle. Literally. and that, as they say, would have been that...

I'm waiting for the day that someone hits a long one, stops, admires the flight of the ball, begins to smile, tugs on his right wristband, continues to watch the ball, cranes his neck to better admire the prodigiousness of the shot, adjusts his elbow pad, smiles some more, observes the flight of the ball as it crosses the barrier of the fence, cranes his neck the other way to eliminate any stress on his neck, smiles some more, watches as a fan leaps to grab the ball, smiles some more, sees the ball bounce off several hands and land in a row, sees the people scrambling to pick it up, smiles some more, adjusts his left wristband, smiles some more, watches as a fan victoriously emerges from the scrum with the ball in hand, smiles some more, shifts his weight from left to right, drops the bat, smiles some more, AND GETS BLINDSIDED BY EVERY PITCHER, BOTH TEAMMATES AND OPPOSITION, HITTING HIM WITH BATS, SMILE DISAPPEARING, BATS SMASHING HIM TO BITS, SMILE GONE and silence falls over the stadium.

"Stop watching and start running!" is the lonely cry.

SF - you should take your idea to Vince McMahon. Perhaps you two can found the new XLB.

Somewhere Bob Gibson is smiling.

Not much pitchers can do today. If they throw at anybody they get tossed from the game.

this, and the NFL fines. what's next, no NHL fights? 3 fouls in basketball? No rugby!?

i hate it when leagues curtail potentially lethal violence.

I agree. Sometimes the threat of great bodily injury is the only way to keep some guys in line.

Somewhere Bob Gibson is scowling.

At least Barry has a good shot at hitting a home run. I have seen guys stand at the plate that hit maybe 10 home runs a year. How do they know it's going out? It's not like they do it all the time and have great knowledge about how it feels.

That won't do, in this case Barry is the same as the guy who hits only 10 a year. Not all of Barry's home runs are 400 feet plus. The idea is to run, if it ends up being a home run, no harm done. If you don't run it out and it does not clear the fence or wall, well, thats not how to play the game.

there's something about 'shoeless joe' saying "thats not how to play the game" just doesn't sound right....

Sorry, I don't understand. Is there a mistake in grammar or maybe the way I laid out the words is confusing. What I meant was, not running out a hit ball is not the way to play the game.
