Default Red Sox claim Ryan Rupe

Fine, but why not Jose Ortiz?

Ortiz is someone you offer a minor league contract to, after he's been released, he looked so bad. Rupe is likely to be at the back of the Bosox' rotation, and in a couple of years could work his way toward the front.

One thing that I wonder about this is that it is reported that he was put on waivers "with the intent of selling his rights to" a Japanese club. If he clears waivers and is sold, then is he off limits to MLB teams? And, do teams avoid claiming such players so as not to interfere in a sale like this?

He seems like a good possible fit for Boston since they don't have any long-term 2B plans.

You think Nixon and Rupe will room together on the road?

I think Rupe has the potential to be a "Ken Phelps All-Star", in that he HAS ability, but has been in a pretty horrible situation in Tampa Bay; a young pitcher with a confused organization.

Rupe pitched better, all things considered, while under the tutelage of Larry Rothschild, who knew how to handle pitchers, and was infinitely better in that area than Hal McRae. He could have Derek Lowe-ish improvement under the right circumstances, although I don't expect him to win 20 next year.

Picking up talent like this is how teams move forward on limited budgets; a player with talent in a bad situation is recognized and acquired while his stock is down. I see Rupe as a pitcher capable of winning 12-15 games in a #3 starter role.

I see him being used as a brute. Need to hit a guy, bring in Rupe.

How soon the young forget....... The famous bat hucking incident happened only last year!!

Quick story! I was flying to TN early Thanksgiving am with Mr hmrsf. I was reading the paper and saw the Sox picked up Rupe. I shouted "oh no!!! and pointed wildly to paper! Mr hmrsf, told me to calm down and told other passengers that it was not such a bad move.

Rupe mowed down the Mariners a couple of times last season. I haven't seen him much, but what he did to the M's was impressive.

Wasn't Rupe rumored to be part of the compensation package for Piniella at one time? If I was the Mariners, I'd have taken Rupe and a prospect instead of Winn. Nice upside potential for low cost and low risk.
