Default Redsox re-sign Embree

1) The Redsox re-signed P Alan Embree to a 2 year, $5.5 million contract, with a team option for 2005.

Embree would have been a free agent. After 4.95 ERA/-5 and 7.33 ERA/-18 RSAA seasons, he had a 2.03 ERA/14 RSAA in 68 games (first 36 with the Padres). Embree has a 4.44 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.45, and -6 RSAA in 432 games.

2) The Rangers hired Don Wakamatsu (bench) and Mark Connor (bullpen) as coaches and will retain Orel Hershiser (pitching), Rudy Jaramillo (hitting), DeMarlo Hale (1B/OF) and Steve Smith (3B/INF).

3) The Devil Rays hired Lee Elia as hitting coach and retained coaches Tom Foley and Billy Hatcher.

4) The Diamondbacks exercised their $1.75 million option on P Mike Myers.

After 1.99 ERA/21 RSAA and 3.60 ERA/8 RSAA seasons, Myers had a 4.38 ERA/0 RSAA in 69 games. He has a 4.24 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.54, and 25 RSAA in 545 games.

5) The Angels released C Sal Fasano and activated minor league P Steve Green from the 60 day DL.

Fasano was 0 for 1, with a SO, in 2 games in 2002 and has a .690 career OPS, compared to his league average of .783, and -30 RCAA in 254 games in 7 years.

6) Yankees P Steve Karsay suffered a herniated disc in his back and could have surgery this week. The Yankees are attempting a coverup, out of fear that news about the injury may give Ramiro Mendoza and Mike Stanton leverage when they hit the open market.

After 3.76 ERA/11 RSAA and 2.35 ERA/21 RSAA seasons, Karsay had a 3.26 ERA/11 RSAA in 78 games. He has a 3.88 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.62, and 47 RSAA in 321 games.

7) The BlueJays signed INF Howie Clark and OF Rob Ryan to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training.

Clark hit .396 SLG, .362 OBA, .758 OPS, -1 RCAA in his first 14 major league games, with the Orioles.

Ryan was 0 for 8, with 6 SO, in 8 games (1 with the Diamondbacks, 7 with the A's) and has a .691 OPS/0 RCAA in 55 games in 3 games.
