The Rockies would be silly to trade their best player, I think (of course it depends on what they get in return), though they'd get out from about $50 mil they owe him...They're reportedly looking for upgrades at 3B, 2B, and C. Walker for Matt Williams? I'd still hold out and try to dump payroll by getting rid of Hampton or Neagle...

I think this is an ok move in Arizona if they don't give up too much. Not a good move in Colorodo though. Hold out, someone will take Hampton.

Why would anyone trade for the 10 million dollar a year DL fodder that used to be Matt Williams?

If the Rockies can obtain three good young players for him, similar to the Indians in the Colon trade, they have to consider it.

If Matt Williams is involved, it's a bad deal. Period. No matter who else comes with him. Besides, the D'backs don't really have any prospects (do they?) to add to any deal. No, if it involves Williams, it is a salary dump - and I hate salary dumps.

I don't think there's anyone tradable on Arizona. Perhaps using a third team could get this done.

I could see the D'Backs wanting Walker if they turn a blindeye to his medical history. The only way the Rockies should do this is if they get quality prospects or if they can include Hampton or Neagle in the deal without having to pick another heavy salary in return. "We'll give you Walker but you gotta take Hampton with him."

AZ doesn't have the package to offer in return for Hampton/Walker. Or the money.

Walker for Matt Williams and whatever else would be a salary dump, however it is somewhat defensible. Williams' contract doesn't have a long to go, and his plate impatience would not hurt him as much at Coors. The reduced payroll would allow the Rox to plan rebuilding. The Rockies are a confused organization with no idea of how to build a team that can win in their unsusual environment. If they can lower their payroll, they may be able to start over and build an ORGANIZATION with a PHILOSOPHY on what it takes to win that is reflected in their play and their personnel moves.
Larry Walker could hit 100 HRs in Coors Field next year, and the Rox still won't go to the series, because of their other deficiencies. They're a collection of talent. They have a long way to go to be a team. |
