Default All-time NFL defensive line

this is a little difficult because it's hard to quantify the play of linemen. of course i'm going to be biased toward recent players because i saw them in action and because, well, they're 30 pounds heavier and probably still faster than linemen of 30 years ago.

LE Reggie White*
DT Joe Greene
DT Alan Page
RE Bruce Smith**

*Reggie could stop the run and could bring it from up the middle so you could shift him to DT and put someone like Too Tall Jones here.

**Charles Haley was one of the greatest pass rushers ever and one of the strongest players ever, pound-for-pound. He did play several seasons with his hand on the ground but I'd rather have him playing further off the edge as a weakside blitzer. but of course that position would have to be filled by LT.

As a unit the original fearsome foursome was pretty good - Roosevelt Grier, Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olson & David "Deacon" Jones.

As individuals, without regard for position, I would pick David "Deacon" Jones, Junius "Buck" Buchanon, Reggie White, Alex " Twinketoes" Karras and "Mean" Joe Greene

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears

Shouldn't Harvey Martin or Randy White enter into this conversation?

The Colts in the late 50s had a pretty decent front four, too,....Gino Marchetti, Art Donovan, Big Daddy Lipscomb, and uh, oops, I forget the fourth guy, maybe Don Joyce or somebody like that.....

Doug Atkins seems to be pretty legendary in this category, too....

well I don't know if he was top 5 all-time, but Dan Hampton was the second best lineman I saw (of the guys I saw enough of to judge). Reggie White was the best.

Simply too many guys to choose from and there is no objective data to separate a defensive lineman from his teammates.
