A pretty good list. I'd include John Riggins, Marcus Allen, and Tony Dorsett. The best guy playing right now at that position is Marshall Faulk.

Thurman Thomas was very underrated since he played at the same time as Smith and Sanders. He was easily one of the best ever.

Jim Brown was the greatest.
I'd take walter payton next. many smarter than me said he was the greatest blocking back ever. Great reciever and threw a few TD's in his day also. He was no Sayers or Sanders coming out of the backfield, but I'd rather have payton on a 3rd and 3. Interesting tidbit. he didn't want to retire when he did, but pete roselle promised him an ownership opportunity which never happened. |

Gotta have Faulk in there somewhere. Pass catching ability is his bonus.

Ironically enough, he would've had that opportunity in the AFL with the Chicago Fury, but he of course died before the opportunity.
I still miss Sweetness. Growing up in Indiana, I must bring Eric Dickerson's name up. There's underrated for you. Had to have done something right to rush for 2,105 yards in a year. |

And talk about under-rated, no mention for Curtis Martin? That guy is quickly becoming top 10 material.

I was trying to go for some archetypes -- Larry Csonka is the ultimate bruising back, probably better than Riggins.
As I see it, Faulk has to displace Craig or Thomas as a two-way threat back. I'm not sure he's done it yet. Dorsett and Dickerson were certainly great, great running backs, but their propensity to fumble makes me hesitant to put them ahead of, say, Barry Sanders, who almost fumbled. The guy I wanted to make room for on the list was Marcus Allen. |

You misunderstood me. The reason he was underrated was he was a great player at the same time as other great players. Sanders would rank higher than Thurman if I were to rank them, but Thurman didn't get the recogntion because of it. |

Jim Brown was a monster. Speed and power like there has never been seen before or since. VNV's list is a good one.
PW, who is Barry Thomas???

I am sure that he has done it. St. Louis' system is designed around Faulk. Sure it helps to have speedy receivers, but it is Faulk's ability to catch passes that open up defenses. You have to commit one or two guys on defense just to stop the guy. Throw in the fact that he is a great runner coming out the backfield, and you have one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL. It's the same way that Buffalo's offensive scheme was keyed on Thurman Thomas. Both guys are the reason that these offense could seemingly score at will. Faulk may not of put up the numbers over the long term like Thomas, but he had the misfortune to be on Indy for a few years while they were badly run. Give him a few years in Martz's system and his numbers over a career will resemble Thomas. I don't think Craig was as good as you feel he was. He never was a grinding type of runner. He was helped by the fact that he was a good receiver in a system that favored the pass. I would of never wanted Craig to be the guy grinding up yards to kill the clock.

I didn't realize Faulk had already gone past 100 touchdowns, I'd have to put him on the list. |

To list Barry Sanders as tenth is really low. He is much better than Thurman Thomas or any of the guys in front of him.
