Default Red Sox shuffling feet in picking GM

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1029/1452990.html

so we've heard plenty about names floating around (beane, alderson, the other duquette, lee thomas, ron schueler, leland maddox, etc)...

the article says the bosox "don't expect to hire one before the middle of next month".

isn't this a very silly move? if they're bringing in an outsider (and not keeping port), doesn't said outsider need time to look at what the team has with enough time prior to the beginning of free agency (nov. 13)??

I'd want to hire quickly, unless they've got their eyes on a specific candidate that they're hoping will become available (Sabean maybe?)

I'm not sure Sox GM is all that attractive of a position - you have the overbearing Lucchino making calls above you, and the team grooming Theo Epstein to eventually replace you. Add that to the fact you've got a clubhouse full of surly, unhappy players, and a demanding fan base.

I'll take that job. Give me a three year deal at the going GM rate, and I'll take it.

that'll be reflected in the length of the contract, no? so you negotiate and get a contract with a hefty buyout clause in case they want to sack you ahead of time. as a GM, you need a time span longer than 1-2 yrs to be able to instill your philosophy.

You can only do this if the other party is willing to agree to it. If they have a plan to move Epstein up at a later date they aren't going to give you a contract that precludes that.

but then what would be the incentive for anyone to take on that job, knowing they have no security? how many gm's get 1-yr contracts?

I heard Larry Lucchino on the radio adressing this issue this morning.

First, when the season ended, Lucchino (in his role as CEO) made very clear to the media and fans that the latest the decision would be made is the end of November. "Hire slowly, fire quickly". So, as far as I am concerned, Lucchino has stuck to his stated timeline and has taken a "look at every possible option" philosophy to this search. Again, I think that this is the right way to proceed.

Since the end of the regular season, the following names have (publicly) been included in the search: Billy Beane, Omar Minaya, Pat Gillick, Jim Duquette, Ron Schuler, Leland Maddox, Mike Arbuckle, Gene Michael, Lee Thomas and Mike Port. Some declined (Minaya, Gillick, Alderson). Some were denied (Beane, Michael). The remainder have had interviews scheduled and conducted. Further, there are now two "mystery candidates" who are current GM's. One requested an interview, the other indicated an interest in being contacted. Speculation holds that Brian Sabean has indicated interest (possibly as leverage in his contract negotiations, possibly because he is legitmately interested). Lucchino stated this morning that "all of our potential candidates have been AVAILABLE for less than 72 hours" - which strongly indicates that Sabean is involved somehow. Further, the current GM who has asked for an interview is speculated to be Jim Bowden, Walt Jocketty, Gerry Hunsicker, or Kevin Towers. That's an exhaustive search.

Lucchino was asked about the "overbearing Larry Lucchino" issue. He indicated that personalities are always a consideration in hiring decisions of this nature (well, duh). Is Lucchino "overbearing"? Some may think so. But I would guess that he's respected by many more than think him "overbearing". Besides, as the CEO, the GM would report to him. Lucchino has no desire to be the GM - but he'll be involved as he was in San Diego and in Baltimore. This, to me, is as much a non-issue as personalities can be in work environment.

Lucchino also addressed the Theo Epstein issue. Epstein is seen as a long-term investment for the Red Sox. He's young (28) and bright. He's going to be involved in the scouting and player development. Lucchino stated that he is not "the GM in waiting" as many speculate. He is a part of the baseball staff and will be evaulated as much on his ability to work with the new GM as he will be on his other skills.

Basically, I don't think the Red Sox are "shuffling their feet". I would expect the process to pick up speed now that Beane has been eliminated (as OAK says they have said no) and the World Series has ended. There are a number of exciting candidates - as well as some wildcards yet to be played.

Patience. Easy to say, hard to do.

No, We need Flanagan to replace Thrift!

(of course given the choice of jobs, I'd take Red Sox too.)

Ok, we'll take MArtinez, Nomar, and Manny. You get Segui, Conine, Hentgen and Erickson

Default Beanetown?

The Red Sox reportedly got permission to talk to Billy Beane about their GM position.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1109/1458361.html

Quote:
The Red Sox are also looking for a general manager, and the New York Times reported Saturday that the Athletics have given Boston permission to speak with general manager Billy Beane.

Citing a baseball source, the Times reported that the two sides might have already spoken.

"Whether anything comes of it, no one knows," the official told The Times.

The Red Sox have sought permission for some time, but Oakland officials had ignored the team's request.

Larry Lucchino, the Red Sox chief executive, told the paper: "We have no comment on the matter. Too much has been said in the newspapers about this matter."

But it has been no secret that Beane is at the top of Lucchino's wish list.

The Red Sox have interviewed seven candidates for their general manager's job, and their interim general manager, Mike Port, is also a candidate. The other interviewed candidates is Jim Duquette, the Mets' senior assistant general manager.
