2) According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have given GM Jim Hendry permission to go as high as possible in order to get his top choice as manager, which is believed to be Dusty Baker.

3) The A's are reportedly working on a 3 year, $2 million deal with Ken Macha.

4) czar bud is rumored to be ready to fine the Mets, and maybe the Mariners and Devil Rays, $50,000 for the media writing stories about the Piniella situation and Art Howe during the World Series. But, there is at least one report that says the penalty might not be imposed, since it was the media's conduct and not the teams.

5) Indians P Dave Maurer had Tommy John surgery last month.

Maurer had a 13.50 ERA/-1 RSAA in 2 games this year and has a 6.00 ERA/-4 RSAA in 19 games over the past 3 years.

6) Astros 3B coach Gene Lamont says he's contacted the Cubs and is interested in the job.

7) Expos P Scott Stewart had arthroscopic elbow surgery last week, to remove a bone spur, and is expected to be at full health by the start of spring training.

After a 3.78 ERA/5 RSAA as a 25 year old rookie in 2001, Stewart had a 3.09 ERA/7 RSAA in 67 games.
