Default Czar Bud does it again

I don't know if anyone else saw this. The league offices have cracked down on Jason Christianson from wearing a tribute on his cap to Darryl Kile. Christianson is in uniform in the Giants dugout despite being injured. Here is a good commentary by Keith Olbermann:

As usual Bud does more harm than good for his sport.

I'm probably one of the few people here who actually thinks uniform uniformity is important - but this "crackdown" is just stupid.

Just because Baseball can't fix some unimportant problems like where will the Expos be next year, how to speed up games and fix the popularity problem of the game, its nice to see they can keep players who don't even play from paying tribute to a fallen comrade. Good Work Bud!

I read an article on this today...the piece implied that several Giants were very, very miffed about the "crackdown". Supposedly, Christianson is contemplating wearing uniform #57 tonight...and again, supposedly, Bonds was contemplating writing on HIS hat. If BB does this, I dare Bud to suspend HIM. That'd be some great publicity for MLB, wouldn't it?

Remember the lightning bolts in "The Natural"? First a few players wore them, then the whole team. It was a good thing for baseball.

Remembering DK is a good thing for baseball too.

When will the owners finally realize what an embarrassment Bud is and dump him?

The more I write in these threads, the more I feel out of place supporting Selig sometimes. But.. here I go again.

I actually think letting people write on their uniforms is a bad thing. A tribute is a nice idea, but could be done in better ways. A whole team doing it is fine - individuals doing it is wrong. The idea that someone could start writing tributed to fallen friends on their uniform in open sight is not a good thing - whether or not that friend is baseball related.

In days past, in order to pay tribute, players would write such tributes inside the bill of their cap - not in a place where you show the world "Look how nice a guy I am! Look how much I care!"

Was there any word on a crackdown on Chuck Finley for wearing the initials "JW" on his hat in tribute to Jimmy Warfield - his trainer in Cleveland?

the word "arbitrary" comes to mind.

if it were gospel that you couldnt do this, no one would. but for selig to SUDDENLY decide to take action against the practice is ridiculous.

as a separate matter, i'd add that they picked the wrong cause to fight on. I mean, if I wanted to impress a woman with how strong I was, I wouldn't beat up a little kid to show her.

But they absolutely have been consistent.

You ask for permission, if they say "Yes" you can wear them, if they say "No," you can not.

There has been no proof of the office actually saying "No" to anyone who asked. I assume Finley followed the protocol, as he hasn't been called out.

Christiansen did not ask for permission, so he was correctly told that he was in the wrong. I don't see what the issue is.

There's nothing wrong with what Christiansen is doing, and MLB does look pretty bad on this. BUT - I think they are just trying to be careful baseball players don't turn into NASCAR drivers, switching between Penzoil/UPS/Jiffy Lube hats between ABs. Obviously, it's a far step from writing initials on a cap to that, so I do agree they overstepped their bounds here.

are you saying that every player to write "DK 57" on his hat this year wrote the mlb for permission?

But the team applied for it. After their trainer died, the Indians had to apply for the JW patch as a team when they wore it.
