Default AL Babe Ruth Award

The votes are in and Jim Thome has unanimously been named the AL Babe Ruth Award winner, as Baseball Immortals version of the MVP. Thome was listed as #1 on all one of the ballots.

Thome led the AL in RCAA by a comfortable 88-75 edge over Jason Giambi. He also led the AL in OPS (1.122), RC (152--tied for the lead), HR/100 OUTS (14.99), HR/100 PA (8.48), HR/100 AB (10.83), BB (122), SLG (.677), OWP (.829), RC/G (11.83), ISO (.373), SEC (.625), TA (1.323) and BPA (.728), and finished 2nd in OBA (.445), HR (52) and IBB (18--tied).

The reigning winner, Jason Giambi (.598 SLG, .435 OBA, 1.034 OPS, 75 RCAA) was a strong candidate for the award before Thome pulled away in September and Manny Ramirez, the 1999 winner, could have been an excellent candidate if he hadn't missed 42 games (.647 SLG, .450 OBA, 1.097 OPS, 73 RCAA).

Alex Rodriguez had no shot at winning. Rodriguez tied Thome for the AL lead with 152 runs created, but Rodriguez used 117 more outs than Thome. Rodriguez also had 117 more PA, so that's the equivalent of Thome's performance plus an 0 for 117 streak ended in. Meanwhile, Rodriguez achieved his totals in an extremely friendly hitters park (126 park factor), while Cleveland was only slightly favorable to offense (103 park factor).

Thome became the 2nd Indians player in 4 years to win the award, joining Ramirez. Prior to them, the only other Indians to win were Nap Lajoie (1903), Elmer Flick (1905), Joe Jackson (1913), Tris Speaker (1916), Larry Doby (1950) and Al Rosen (1953).

Hehehehe! I so agree! I was thinking along the same lines.
Thome had an amazing season. Manny had a "what could been." Thanks Lee!

Really interesting since Thome has only a slightly better chance than I do of winning the MVP award. It's always good to stand back and look at the numbers rather than listen to the ESPN talking heads.

In the absolute closest of cases, fielding would get considered. But, I can't think of any examples in which that happened.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Dewey Evans year? He won one, no? Was fielding a factor?

Evans won in 1981.

He had a comfortable lead in RCAA (7, but with 1/3 of the season wiped out, that's the equivalent of a double digit figure win). He had a comfortable lead in runs created, runs created/game, lead the league in OPS, had one of just 3 .400+ OBAs in the league.

Fielding could have put him over the top, if the race was closer, but there was enough there for him to not need that boost.

I know.....but I like to have someone else say it other than me. Your Babe Ruth award also corrects some wrongs done by the MVP. Just like your baseball immortals corrects the HOF slights!! I call Lee and Steve the patron saints of the under appreciated baseball players.

NO WAY!!!!!!!!!

I still have animosity towards prosecutors from my days as a Public Defender.

But, the evidence does show that I have become the prosecutor of the overrated.

I'm also definitely the prosecutor of the media and of the stupid. And those cases, I think I'd like to prosecute.

The problem is it's far from a slam dunk.

In the eyes of the public, the general wisdom is the truth. So, it has to constantly be drilled into people that was the media drills into them is wrong before people see the real truth.

there's a slight miscalcuation here. if you take Thome and add in a 0-for-117 then his RC total would drop far below A-Rod's total. A-Rod's A factor and B factor are both superior to Thome's, drastically so, and if you make the outs closer to even, then A-Rod would be dramatically ahead. (an 0-for-117 streak would drop Thome's OPS below 1000)

you're right about the park effects though.
